It wasn't their first kiss.

She knew she shouldn't really count it—after all, Mal hadn't exactly been an active participant. It had been little more than an expression of profound relief that he was alive—that that pofù Saffron had merely drugged him into unconsciousness, rather than killing him outright. It had been a kiss which had made her swoon, to be sure. But for all the wrong reasons.

Neither was it their second kiss, which had been full of passion fuelled by a year of longing and desire they'd both done their best to bury and ignore until it had become impossible. He'd kissed her to shut her up—to rattle her, to stop the endless flow of words in whatever argument that had them practically screaming at one another in a deserted hallway yet again. That kiss had been violent in a way that still made Inara's heart beat faster at the memory of it. Made her flesh warm and her breath grow short as she relived how his hands had clutched at her arms, almost but not quite to the point of bruising. She couldn't remember, now, what they'd been fighting about. She just remembered the hunger. The heat that had flared between them, burning them both with its intensity. Burning the carefully erected bridges and walls.

It was not their fifth kiss, which had been a simple peck up on the catwalk before he'd gone out on a job. Jayne had asked where his kiss was and before she could even fo

This I adored. I just love the notion that all the dancing around and swordfights have brought them to this place of ease and passion. I am particularly happy that Inara has lost count of how many kisses they have shared, it makes my shippy little heart dizzy with joy for them both (and for me). Lots of blessings to Hawkmoth for inspiring you to write this. Wonderful, *xie xie ni* - Ali D :~)

Awww, that just brings warm fuzzy feelings to my heart. I absolutely loved the way you grouped each paragraph and how well it all just melded together till the end. I was practically beaming at your last line. "But as she cried out, rocking against him, she realised she'd simply lost count." Absolutely PERFECT.

Most yummy, Tara!! The notion that the first kiss should happen in the heat of an argument is bang-on, IMO!

I'm surpassingly curious about what would happen to Inara's identity as a Companion, if this romance should finally burst forth. Here's hoping 'Versal pictures gives us a chance to find out!

Till then, I'd love to see you take that on...

Yippee! To come the the BSR with little hope of anything new to find *this*! I am still grinning, disappointed only that it was over so soon. Terrific characterization and vivid imagery - "Half-awake, she'd reached up to trace the curve of his jaw with a fingertip, smiling lazily like a cat in a pool of sunshine." - so simple but so perfect! Please share more of your talent soon (how 'bout Jayne and Kaylee? ;)

Lovely and evocative. Mal and Inara are a bit of magic for me, and this piece of poetry in prose locks them solidly in romance and light porn bliss. "Inara mused as Mal took her bottom lip and sucked it lightly the way he knew she liked, her hands digging into his shoulders, leaving marks with her nails that he would carry for the rest of the night, but would be nothing more than pink half-moons by morning." Mmmmmmm. Good. More please! And take them higher, if you please. More sex is good sex the way you write it.

Awww... sigh. I love this. Just love it. Mal and Inara are so complicated, and it's wonderful to get such a believable glimpse of what they might be like together. Excellent idea and excellent execution.

I love these two and I love them together. Absolutely beautiful and very well written.*tear**sniffle* I love that their first kiss comes from him trying to shut her up. That's totally within their characters. Shiny. Now, I'll be in my bunk. . ..."Are you saying I'm doing this deliberate on accounta you?Is there some reason why I should want you off the job?" "I don't know. You tell me."
