Author's Note: I bet all of you were thinking I fell off the face of the earth. Well not quite. I was just dangling a bit.

This story is very short. I wrote it a few weeks ago, never meaning to post it, but just as a way to get my feelings out. But what the heck, I'll post it anyways. I hope you all get the obvious lesson from this story.

As always, thanks for reading. =o)

Appreciation

By KaySky

As she peered through the window of the infirmary, a single tear slid down her check. She was thinking of all the things she never got to say, and all the things they never got to do together. But even more so she wondered how she ever survived without him. The simplest things in life seemed so complicated now. She thought she had always been a grateful soul, but she never realized how unappreciative, or how much she took for granted, until he was almost gone.

So many days had passed by. She eventually lost track. Days of the week, hours of the day, these were all meaningless to her now. Her world had stopped on Saturday at 10:02 pm, the day after his 26th birthday.

The others urged her to leave his side and sleep in a real bed. It would do her some good, they told her. She was reluctant, but she was too exhausted to fight them. They assured her someone would be by his side at all times. They assured her he would not be alone.

So alone she laid in their empty bed. Her left side, the side that was always nestled against his warm body, felt so cold. A bed that always seemed so cramped now seemed like it was miles wide. She tried to close her eyes, but all she could see were the images of him in the infirmary. Only this time they weren’t the images of the Simon the doctor. They were images of Simon the patient. Images she always thought she’d never see.

At that moment, she broke down and wept. How did she ever survive without him? What if she has to again? The more she thought the harder she cried. The more regret she felt. She mostly regretted never telling him how much he meant

Thanks for all the shiny feedback. =o) This little piece was from Kaylee's POV, but I can see how it might work from River's POV as well.

I might expand on this story sometime later, but for now I need to finish "The Unexpected". So off I go to write... *Hangs up a do not disturb sign on her office door*

Wow, very nice and powerful. The first time I read this, I thought he'd died.

I'd like to see more of this as well. But I want to see more of The Unexpected more! :)
