Black Days: River (7/7)

Using all her brain power, River concentrated on finding a path back into her dream. She had been a lepidoptera and had been happily flitting about her mother’s garden. Flying from the heliotropia to the amaranthus caudatus, she happily fed on the sweet nectar until her butterfly eye had fallen on a woman calmly pruning her prized Queen Elizabeths. Butterfly River recognized the woman as her mother and tried to fly to her but a bright purple and red striped ladybug as well as the cloying scents of the roses kept diverting her attention and River woke without ever reaching her mother. She wanted to be back in the dream world - not to reach her mother but because she enjoyed being a butterfly.

The trail of her dream became hopelessly lost, however, as images from the crew assaulted her. River’s eyes snapped open, immediately focusing on some random point on the ceiling. It wasn’t the imperfections and discolorations of the ceiling that drew her attention; her mind was not registering what her eyes perceived. Her mind was being inundated with the colors and waves of emotion that flowed through Serenity. Black for the Captain, hollowed but not empty, sitting on his chair in his bunk staring at nothing. Purple for Zoë

You saved the best one for last! Who knew that it would be the little crazy girl who tore them apart, and it would be the saner crazy girl to put them back together. Good choice of a book in the Outsiders - very appropriate to their circumstances. I liked how you showed Mal's desperation in his thoughts, but his actions showed his control. Zoe had a purpose as his voice of reason, but I would like to think he would have come to that conclusion that the drug running was too dangerous on his own. Loved loved the dream of River as a butterfly - it sounded so much like River, and the illusion of a hedge as sanity was perfect. Great job and a wonderful read!

I liked the way you wrote River and was convinced that the ladybug was Inara at one point. With River making them all whole again there is no need for Simon to want to take her and leave. Win win. Ali D :~)

"I think you're Darry." That was so inspired. The correlation between The Outsiders and our intrepid heroes was interesting, to say the least. Loved River perception of Mal & Inara's conversation, both verbal and mental. I love post-BDM and your writing is great.

Keep flyin'
