Hi there. I’ve been cruising and striking and such, like a good little fan. :) I did some writing on the boat, because that’s a vacation to me – time to write instead of running code all day and hanging drywall all night and weekend. (I’m feeling bummed about going back to sucky real life tomorrow – can you tell? :p) So now the next few chapters are nearly complete, and some of the crew’s story that’ll start in chapter 14. Cause you know they’re up to stuff, and I’ll be getting back to it…

I hope life is good for y’all. Oddly, even though I’ve spent the past week with fans, I’m oddly feeling down about the fandom and fanfic. Seems like most writers are experiencing the dying out of interest, and life is such that I can’t spend so much time on this anymore. (Have original things to write…) Or it could be that I’m just burned out of my own fic. Entirely possible. Anyway, I really need to finish and move on, so if writing quality goes down… hell with it, it’s all about moving on with the storyline, right? ;)

Hang in there, honey, you're doing good work. But I am glad to hear you're you've got some characters of your own now.

Nothing ever worth doing is ever easy, or not a challenge to mind and body. Star Trek fandom was years building its momentum before the PTB noticed, but it always kept building its fanbase. Creative types like writers may need greener pastures for stimulation, but still the fandom keeps growing. You have tremendous talent and perseverence to have accomplished this much. Let your creativity be a growing thing too - and have fun with this fic and its creation- we are! You may have talked to other writers who are writing less, there are many who are writing more. And new ones begin all the time. When you started the Fish Job, you commented that there was less writing going on then. Well, the BSR is still here. And that was quite a lot of fic ago. It's that pesky half full half empty analogy all over again. Sorry for the verbosity, but your writing is wonderful - and there's so much story left to go - and a happy ending - right?

Oh, please don't give up - I just discovered Firefly fandom a few months ago, and I'm thrilled at how many excellent writers are keeping the 'verse going! I check the BSR every day, loving how many new fics are posted daily and that updates to old fics still appear (even when there are months between chapters). Whatever you write, we readers appreciate! :)

Zoë’s reaction to the "old Mal" was interesting. We didn't see much of this idealistic phase (in Mal's life) surface during the short run of the series. We only have hints and peeks from the flashbacks of his experiences during the war, that give us brief insights in to his non heroic loss. Reading this left me thinking that this is the Mal that Zoë may have fallen in love with if outcomes and circumstances weren't different, for them. Is that what she sees in Wash? Mal's lost youth... the dinos, the fun Aloha shirts, the improv poetry, just a thought.

Anyway, I beg you to keep writing. You are one of the few authors posting here that doesn't get bogged down in unrealistic plotlines, clichéd dialog, fantasy OCs, and implausible pairings with invalid characterizations.

I would like to read the summation of your story, at least to the part of Inara returning and a resolution between her and Zoë could prove to be insightful, because obviously Inara is in love with all the fragmented parts of Mal, that she can’t jigsaw together. (“I’ve seen so many versions of you”)

Personally, for me, you keep the verse alive until Joss can return.

Absolutely brilliant. Glad that Mal is also having a ball for a change.

The despair in Zoe near the end threw me. Totally unexpected and totally right at the same time.

“Zoë,” he says in a grand voice, “it’s a basic truth my momma taught me: If we don’t try, we won’t ever fail.”

“Yes, sir. And so I think… Actually, sarge, that’s exactly what I mean. If we…”

Absolutely brilliant!

Thanks for the insight Platonist! I totally see the connection between young Mal and Wash, though I never set out to write it that way. It makes sense, that there is a similarity for Zoe between her bond with young Mal and her love for Wash.

Uh... and sorry about the above whinging all. I don't mean that I'll quit this, cause I have too much stuff written to not post it. I just feel like I don't have enough time to be so detailed, and need to convince myself to cut it out and move on more quickly.

You're right, Katesfriend, that the appearance of waning fandom has been going on for some time. But there really are less hits and feedback now then when I posted the Fish Job. I think there's also a difference in content. To be honest, it's a little frustrating to me when barely literate out of character porn gets piles of feedback and I get maybe a few comments. (I'm talking LJ, not this site). Makes me think I should be devoting my time to something that may have an actual effect on improving my life. It's all about getting out of my day job before I enter a permanently catatonic drool-y state.

I bet you think I'm kidding. If only...

You already know I like what you've done with fleshing out the backstory for Mal and Zoe that we never got to see.

And it was nice to see Zoe laugh, if even for a short time.

And you know I'll keep nagging you until this is finished!
