Okay, this is probably going to be the last one for a while, and it represents the conclusion of the Ghosts of Serenity storyline. Fear not, I figure on starting a new story arc with Cafferty and company, but I think I'll be needing a bit of a break before launching into that. I appreciate all the great comments and compliments from everyone, ya'll have gone and made me feel like I'm almost a decent writer. The only complaint I have is the sheer lack of indecent proposals I've received since I started. But such is life. Enjoy.

Colonel Isaac Kendrick was one hell of a doctor, and he did a good job of running a MASH unit on top of that. Cafferty generally thought the two traits were rather mutually exclusive, but every once in a while someone came along and proved him wrong.
"Go ahead, have a seat Cafferty. I have some things here that you probably want to hear."
Cafferty settled into the collapsible chair across from the portable desk occupied by Colonel Kendrick. He didn't know exactly what the man figured he would want to hear, but he had learned to respect Kendrick over the past week.
"Okay, some official business to get out of the way here," Kendrick said, lifting up the datapad and scrolling down. The bright screen reflected off of his green eyes and cast a glow over his graying hair.
"Good news first," Kendrick then continued, his tone rising a bit as he started reading the text message. "Kevin Joseph Cafferty, service identifier 6-November-5723-Niner-Alpha-2 is hereby promoted to Med-Specialist 1st Class, promotion to take effect from date of order." Kendrick paused. "That was two days ago, congratulations."
Cafferty had almost forgotten that he was technically still in the army.
"Next item of business. For valor above and beyond the call of duty, as witnessed by his comrades in the field of battle, Med-Specialist 1st Class Cafferty is hereby to be awarded the Star of Valor. This being his third award of of this type, h
Very interesting tag story and we've all heard that about something being in the mail. Which means that Caffery will get everything in about three months, seeing that he lives on a border world.
Interesting that the other guy is from Shadow. Could we see that maybe he's someone that Mal may have had a run in with?
Lots of possiblities.
Wulf... if you could get Zoe talked around to some indecency in my direction, we might get somewhere. Or I might get awful distracted and not ever do anything again.

Defender82 that even happened in the Old West. Many frontier soldiers became very big advocates for the Indians as they knew first hand what conditions were like on the reserves and knew what the Indian agents were doing.
I don't know how you did it, but you created a whole 'nother world in a few short stories. I'm not a writer, but it seems to me that this would have taken complete 100% involvement.
As far as its integration with the Firefly story- one of the things that I worry about is a series that focuses on just the original characters. After all, there are only so many ways that you can bounce them off of each other, New characters that are as fully imagined as these really enhance the whole storyline.
And I'm intensely curious about your background. You MUST have been part of the military!
Anon- Nope, that's one misconception I forgot to clear up a while back. Medical DQ kept me from my boyhood dream of being a Gyrene. As for creating the alternate setting, well, as I said before I was in the zone. Characterization comes fairly naturally to me, especially characters with mindsets somewhat similar to mine, such as Cafferty and Miloslaw. I guess you could say insomnia has been my greatest asset with this storyline, 'cause every night I tried to go to bed, a new story would start writing itself. Inevitably about three a.m. I'd have to get up and put it on 'paper' just to get it to go away.
And then be damned if a new one wouldn't start forming, but I could drive that off by thinking about the last one.
Maybe after Firefly has had a few seasons, three or four, we could start talking spin-off with Joss. Heh.

Some morality plays in life are fairly in-you-face. Some are subtle. Others are downright murky.

If they have a 'Firefly' comic, you need to write for them!
