Book One – Chapter Eleven

_______________________________________________________________

Carolina Novak was Carolina Bueren before the migration to Neo Sombra. She was nineteen years old when she and her older brother, Rex, were evacuated off Shadow. Their parents stayed behind.

The two of them managed to stay on Harvest Moon for over a year, living the best they could manage, and trying to forget everything they could about their homeworld. Just like the rest of Shadow’s former populace. Harvest, being a planet not unlike Shadow, had several opportunities for a farmer like Rex Bueren, but he, not unlike most of Shadow, was unsatisfied with their forced living situations and was unwilling to give up on his planet. Young and stubborn he made a decision, and he brought his sister along with him.

The two Bueren siblings kept their hands off of their reparation accounts, while scrimping and saving every cent they could to pay their passage to a Core Planet, ending up on Ariel, the closest they could get. It was their intention to approach a Parliamentary representative with the unheard of notion of purchasing an exclusively terraformed planet, a feat that had never been considered, especially by two Border Planet hillbillies like Rex and Carolina Bueren. Their only two chances lay with the fact that there were about five more planets and moons on the Outer Rim that had yet to be fully terraformed (and the Alliance generally didn’t care about their fate so much), and with the belief that what little money the survivors of Shadow had, they could pay their way through not only the terraforming, but the legalities of bureaucracy that would be inevitable.

However, as luck would have it, a young man from Shadow named James Novak found the Beurens on Ariel. Though they didn’t know it at the time, James was on the Core Planet for an entirely different reason.

Of course, having the rare similarity of being from the same Border Planet, James and the Buerens instantly connected. As they talked and trade

You know, I don't have enough good things to say about this series. I'm so glad you're working on it again!

I wonder what Simon wanted to talk to Kaylee about up on the bridge?

And what will River find at the bottom of that pond?

Coded Alliance signals like the one that set River off in the Maidenhead bar and no Simon there to put her to sleep if she goes crazy again.

The conversation with the Baron was well done, and now the law is at James' front door and I wonder if Simon will run down to try and find River and get caught.

All very interresting stuff! Please don't keep us waiting too long for the next chapter!

Oh, good gorram, what's the bet that this isn't a natural neighbourly visit from the sheriff? Please don't let River drown or Mal get carted off to some Alliance penal colony for the simply sin of wanting to be free. Can't wait for the next part, Simon is going to go so crazy. Ali D :~)

WOw I just love that you have put up a new chapter!!! Very curious about what Simon wanted to ask Kaylee! And the pond /River stuff, creepy and intriguing, I had such an image of her body slipping into the pond, it was great! Carolina and James Novak's conversation was great but my favorite line was during Mal and Baron's conversation-
“You’re liking the animal similes today, aren’t you?”

“Yeah, I went to the zoo yesterday.”

THat was sooooo Joss! Can't wait for your next post!

Okay, someone needs to get River before she drowns! Hurry!

And what about Simon? Will he go looking for her and get snatched, leaving his sister to float in the pond? And I too would love to know what Simon wanted to talk with Kaylee about.

And what exactly is stuck in Jayne's craw? Please post soon!

Was Simon gonna ask Kaylee to marry him? With that necklace that he has?

Who's gonna rescue River? Why's Jayne in such a bad mood? Mal gonna get arrested?

So many questions and only YOU have the answers! Post soon!

Why do I get the feeling that James' issues with Mal being there are tied to whatever River is now searching for in the Novaks' pond? Cuz I find it odd that something so mysterious is just sitting at the bottom of the pond and is calling to River at such a time that things are getting nutty...

Still...amazing stuff here, TSB! Loving it to bits;)
