I have a theory I'm considering - that human technology including very simple technologies like the bowl allow surplus. Every surplus allows a parasitic social layer to evolve that wouldn't be survivable if resources were at a pre-technology level. Unadaptive arrangements would quickly die out in more marginal circumstances. But with increasing technology you get pyramids, feudal kings and princes and dukes, k’uhul ajaw, or capitalists. I see no difference between them as they all seem to be a layer that creates, promotes and enforces their ability to skim unearned resources from the society.
