You're thinking about darts, Marina. And you make a very good point.

The reason I asked about darts is that I have a small waist and am not so small elsewhere, so boxy things just tend to make me look fat. I sometimes end up adding darts into shirts, so they don't gap so much in the back.

Just a little bit of shaping at the waist in the back, and maybe at the sides, would probably make the jacket sit a little better on the more normal (not size 2!) female form.

But, in the end, I defer to Tristan, who has WAY more skills in this sort of thing than I do.

Goodness, I wish I could gain 20lbs and be a size 2!

Sorry for the delay in answering...it's a busy day here and I have not had much chance to login.

Marina, why do you have to make my life difficult?
*sigh* Ok, I'll see what I can do about darts in the back. I was trying to create a pattern that I could size up or down (like the Browncoats) to fit a wide variety of bodies, but no! You have to go and ask for shaping darts! Sure, make my life difficult already! Oy!
(Please forgive the previous...I am being sarcastic. I agree with y'all. If you want a shapely jacket, then I will build a shapely jacket...anything to keep y'all happy! )

Whim, thank you! Depending on how this thing works, I may see what other brocade fabric I have laying around.

No no, no darts in the dress (are darts hard?) just funky panel things and a very particular cut along the back. In fact, if I convince you to make me one, I think you'd probably have to get measurements...it seems to be very form fitting along the sides? I don't know, you're the master!

Whim, and everyone else, too...
I do have access to reds, greens, dark blues, etc. of the Chinese fabric...it's just the peacock that's a pain to find. Would it be easier for me to have samples of the cloth I have access to, and let y'all pick the fabric? The pattern of the jacket would be the same as Kaylee's jacket, just the cloth would be different.

Let me know your opinions on this.

It looks like I may have to get a website for all of this...

Marina, thank you for understanding my sense of humor!

Darts are not all that bad, it's just what you are talking about are more gather-darts than regular darts. Whereas regular darts usually go from the edge of the cloth inwards, the gather darts are kinda like half-circles. Not impossible, not really even hard, but as a male, I have a tough time figuring out where they need to go. Best thing to do would be to travel to everyone's house that orders one, and tailor-make it while they wait. However, that would get quite expensive...

True, you are keeping me on my toes, and I am glad I am helping you get through the day!

On my plate right now is finishing the Kaylee jacket and tweaking what will become the Zoe coat. I have a pattern that I am altering, and almost have a cloth version together. When that's built, I get to play with it to see what else needs to be changed. Along with that, I am repatterning the Zoe leather vest...and that's coming along well, too! The hardest part to figure out on that will be how to make it different sizes for different people...

Marina, I would love to tackle the dress. If you can give me a few weeks and then email me, I should be at a point where I can think about other projects...or I'll be stark raving mad by then and I'll do it anyway!

Tristan - you should most definitely have a website for all this! Not only to display your chameleon self but also to show off your skills with needle and thread - it is a pain trying to track down your creations through the jungle of FFF threads! (but it does lead to finding some interesting stuff along the way - every cloud has a silver lining!)

I look forward to seeing the finished article... amazing work.

MRT, thank you! My provider actually comes with webspace, so I guess I'll have to figure out how to access it...
Part of what I enjoy about FFF.net is the number of things you can find when looking for something specific...I would never want to completely quite posting costumes here! It's the praise that keeps me coming back for more!
