Howdy, all!
I finally found a decent pattern for the Kaylee jacket. I have built one, but the only cloth I had laying around was white brocade, so I know the color and cloth are not right. This was built to see what it looked like, and so that I could mess with the pattern until it looked more like Kaylee's jacket.
I have since found some cloth that looks alright, and will be posting pics of the actual completed jacket next week...right after I get it built. I'm still trying to find the right kind of buttons....
As for price, I'm looking at at least $60 right now plus shipping (which should not be too high). The cloth I found, while not a perfect match, is still of a very good quality...and the store really likes the cloth (it's sort of expensive). I am hoping to find a cheaper source before too long. Hell's Kitten, if you are reading this, I may call on you after all, if the offer is still there?

Details:
The jackets will be built in full sizes (probably 8-20+). I figured out a way to line them, so the only "raw" edges will be on the inside sleeve cap. It should only take a day to build one of these, but I have yet to make buttons/buttonholes, so don't quote me on that just yet!

And I can afford one of these! Yay!
Not at this exact instant mind (bills to pay and all that) but it is in my range.
And It actually looks quite good without buttons. I know you go for all the details but it still looks great. Can't wait to see the final version.

I don't mean to sound all (word?) but you can insert the lining without leaving raw edges at the sleeveheads - if you wan't me to i'll try and write the direction or find the illustrations

(it too late to be doing anything vaguely intelligent now!)

it looks so cool though, i really like the shape! HAve you thought about a light quilted lining to make sure it keeps the required boxy shape?

I will be ordering one! (just not till after christmas, no spending on self till presents a bought!, and i've already broken that by going to london)

I know the colour and cloth aren't exactly right but... does anyone else think that this looks exactly like something Kaylee would wear? I can see her wearing that jacket!

Seryn, I did do that on one of the versions of the coat...and it drove me batty. I have settled on doing a tight zig-zag to reduce the thread spill-over. Depending on how the new linin cloth works, I may be able to close it off. I would be more than happy to take direction from you, if you are so inclined!
Had not thought of the quilted lining. I've been studying every picture of her jacket I can find, and I don't think there is a quilted lining. The brocade holds the shape quite well. I chose a stiffer lining cloth to use with the Chinese fabric, so hopefully it will have the effect of stiffening the coat a bit.

oh, i know! i made a dress once and made a total mess of inserting the lining, i ended up with this twisted ball of fabric that i couldn't even untangle it enough to re open a seam.

but with jackets it usually just involves making the lining as one and the outer as one, sewing right side to right side around the front edges and hem leaving the neck free, and then sewing the cuffs, before putting the collar on, trapping both layers together.

cept i can't think of the point at which you turn the sleeves out and sew the cuffs - i think its after you turn the body through, but i could be wrong.

I'll think it out - i'm currently thinking out how to construct a corset where the one edge of the outer layer on each panel is extended to form a false button stand (nightmare!) so a jacket should be a welcom distraction!

Yes, you're right on the quilting, it doesn't look like it features in the original, but it definitley keeps the boxy shape somehow - it probably is a stiff lining.

I do have a question: are there any darts in it at all, to give it any shape? It doesn't look like there are.

Serenity, I'll be out of town this weekend, but I'll be putting together a Chinese fabric jacket when I get back.
As far as darts, there are two on each shoulder (front and back) to give it a bit of shape, but none anywhere else. The cut of the jacket gives it a bit of shape, but I was trying to follow the boxy look of her jacket.

Beautiful!

Of course I'll be thrilled to see it in some other fabrics, although this one is quite pretty on its own.

You have certainly maintained the boxy look of the jacket - but I wonder (and I'm no seamstress so forgive my language/suggestion) if it might make sense to put some shape in the back of it?

Kaylee/Jewel, despite having gained 20 pounds for the role, was still a size 2, so the boxy shape worked beautifully on her. For those of us a bit larger, it might look better on if it had those little shape lines along the back? I don't know what they're called.

But yes! Come Christmas, you will have my business :D Keep it up! (Next is River's funeral dress, right, right? ;) )
