$165 Million Production Budget. It needs $412.5 Million to break even.

I'm surprised, looking back on recent entries how much these films actually gross worldwide. If it were a good economy, I'd be hesitant to call this a flop even with the high price tag. The 2017 entry just barely made 2.5 times its budget worldwide, but that was at a time where only twice the budget was necessary for breaking even on a big budget movie. Those days are long gone.
I may be premature predicting a flop on this one. We'll have to see how it does this weekend to know for sure.
Eventually we're going to have to have a few successful summer blockbusters to top the 2024 list and knock Chinese cinema out of the top 10. I'm just not convinced that a Planet of the Apes movie is going to be the first one to do it this summer.

I thought 'Barbie' would do just so-so and 'The Fall Guy' would be a big hit...so I'm going to wait on this one.

I thought that Barbie would do so-so too. I also thought that Wonka was only going to eek out a minor profit if any at all too. And I was dead wrong on Oppenheimer which made about twice what I thought it ever would.
Can't win 'em all.
I've got pretty much a 100% rate going for 2024 so far though, so I'm bound to get one wrong eventually. This is probably the riskiest prediction I've made so far this year based off of the performance of the last few entries.
This prediction is more based off of the terrible economy and habits we've seen up until this point in the year. Summer time is coming though and people will be seeing more movies regardless of how much they're struggling.
I'll admit it...
It might just be my bias against "Apes" movies motivating my prediction here.
We shall see.

BoxOfficePro is really slow on their predictions this year. I believe I read something late last year that one of the people responsible for them was either sick or had some other real-life issues that were going to slow those down.
Variety believes it will make $50 Million in the US and another $80-$90 Million international for a worldwide opening of $130-140 Million.

At $130 Million it's 79% of the production budget. At $140 Million it would be 85%.
Not that we can completely rely on last years numbers to predict this years box office behavior, but if anything I'd say that this year things have been pretty much nothing but worse for Hollywood.
That being said, a movie that made around 80% to 90% of its production budget back on opening weekend was about a coin flip for breaking even in 2024. Pretty close to half the movies that grossed in that range on opening weekend ended up making money.
Honestly, I'm breathing a little sigh of relief here after seeing that article. Almost everybody has been overestimating how much an opening weekend would make on the movies released so far this year. But that could work against me too since Variety might be low-balling their predictions on this one after getting so many others wrong.
If it does only $130 Million or less, I think it's already over. If it makes $140 or more though, it might actually make some money if word of mouth is good and it has good legs.
4 years ago this probably would have made over $200 Million on opening weekend, or damn near close to it.

Well it made $6.6 Million on preview Thursday.
Not even close to Dune: Part 2's $12 Million preview night, but more than double that of Fall Guy's $3.1 Million and quite a bit more than Ghostbusters' $4.7 Million. Dune: Part 2 has grossed $708 Million worldwide on Day 70. Ghostbusters and Fall Guy are both flops.
Though I'm sure children's movies behave much differently, Kung Fu Panda only had $3.8 Million in previews but it stands at over $525 Million worldwide right now after 62 days.
Godzilla x Kong opened to $10 Million in previews and now has $548 Million worldwide after 42 days in the box office.
And I have no idea what any of this means in 2024. 
I'm looking forward to seeing what Bruce predicts for this one.

The big mystery is why anybody but a moron or a teenager would travel further than their living room and pay more than nothing to see an Ape Movie. Why do people buy expensive tickets, eat overpriced popcorn, and travel great distances to and from home for these movies? How awful does your home have to be to make a trip to the garish movie theater an improvement worth paying for in your living standards?
The Budgets tend to increase and the Box Office tend to decrease with each new Ape movie.
Best bet is that today’s Ape will be a worse business investment than the previous Ape.

I know we don't agree on much, but I'm not going to argue you on this one. The only time I ever go to the theater anymore is down by my brother's place in rural America where they have a theater that only has two screens. That place is actually clean, the tickets are cheap, like $6, and if you want pop and a popcorn they only charge you $3 more. Go during the week and there's usually like 12 other people in there, max, and everybody keeps their damn mouth shut during the movie.
Going to the theaters in the Burbs in current year is awful. Floors are sticky, people talk during the movie like they're in their own living room, everything costs a fortune and I just spend the whole movie wondering why I'm even there. It's been over 10 years since I've done that to myself.

That's only the US Box office though. They all made more overseas than they did in the US. That's why I'm not super confident in my prediction that this will be a flop until we see at least the first weekend numbers on Monday.
I'm just surprised at how much money they actually do tend to make worldwide. Personally, I've never seen the appeal with this franchise.

I will make a new prediction, almost the same as the old prediction: TV will be the slow death of movie theaters. Disney struggles because the prediction is slowly coming true, not because Disney's politics offends Trumptards and definitely not because Biden is the President "destroying" America who must be stopped at all costs by Trump. So what is killing the movies if it is not Biden and the Democrats? Technology plus free movies on TV only a few weeks after the same movie premieres in theaters will be the slow death of movie theaters.

Many people (including me) want a good reason to get out of the house for a few hours. I'll pay too much for tickets and Snow Caps if the flick isn't a waste of my time. Lately there hasn't been any flicks to get all that excited about. I love Deadpool but it looks like a multiverse parody flick I can wait for on cable, and I didn't much care for the first Joker so I'll wait for Joker 2 to come to cable also.
