That whole Afghanistan DEAD OR ALIVE! don't think about him that much ... but IRAQ! now THAT'S a problem ... We were pulling troops out of Afghanistan to put into Iraq. You would have thought lots of people might have noticed. It wasn't as if there was a long, long time between wars so people had a chance to forget. It all happened within a span of 12 months. Obama was forced to back down on the Syrian red line. I don't think that'll happen again. Putin won't back down either - as you pointed out this is on his border. The question is - who escalates, and how far?
Well, it depends on who the powers are and what they want.
When it comes to Putin, I believe he's acting in the interests of his country. That kind of interference on his borders isn't something he can ignore. (I know you've brought this up, this is my take as well.) And I'd say that Putin has a strong hand. Russia has low external debt - about 736b USD. It exports almost twice as much as it imports. http://atlas.media.mit.edu/profile/country/rus/ There aren't too many trade sanctions the US could impose that wouldn't hurt the US - and especially Europe (think Russian natural gas) - far worse.
When it comes to the US, you need to look at the deep state (as you pointed out elsewhere, but this is an idea I've been noodling on for a while). Who exactly runs the State Department when it comes to the topic of the Ukraine? If the neo-cons are in power, then I expect they're as crazy as always, and will escalate as far as they need to achieve their ends - whatever those are.
That topic would take some serious digging! - which I don't have time for at the moment. But one thing that developing events will show - is what is the real aim. Facts will out eventually.

However, gas prices in a more "independent" east would still rise if IMF mandates Kiev to remove subsidies, which it is likely to do. So although some of the concerns of the eastern cities might be assuaged, they will still be bound by economic agreements and loans with the west, and by whatever currency fluctuations might occur with the hryvnia.

Novofedorivka (Undefined) (AFP) - About 200 pro-Russian protesters on Saturday stormed a Ukrainian air force base in western Crimea, forcing the soldiers to leave as the Ukrainian flag was taken down.
The unarmed crowd yelling "Russia! Russia!" broke through to the base in the town of Novofedorivka and started smashing windows.
Ukrainian servicemen barricaded themselves inside buildings and threw smoke bombs at the intruders from the roof. Some of the people threw the smoke bombs back at the soldiers.
