SHINY, BRENDA- I was really busy and I couldn't respond in full last night. Still don't have the time this AM but wanted to say this in passing: If you think our (i.e. the west's) involvement in Ukraine is about "freedom" then you have some incredibly rose-colored glasses on. It's not about freedom, its about making the world safe for capitalism, and extending the rule of America over the whole globe. And while Putin may have an ego ... Obama doesn't? You need to educate yourselves a lot more about the state of the world.

I don't watch ANY news, but as I was making a pot of coffee on my night shift I saw more than 60 seconds of this and what John Kerry said....
All I thought was "he's not speaking for me, Russia."
I hated GWB for 6 years for the illegal wars he got us into. Obama got us into two more while breaking his promise to end the existing wars.
John Kerry's little rant was meek and pathetic with a little bit of passive-aggressive playground-bullying tactics mixed in.
All I thought was "STFU dude. You and your party already did the best you could to make sure that we don't have any bullets to buy for the guns you couldn't take away. (I know I bitch about taxes on cigarettes, but it's getting that you can only load your gun if you're rich if you don't know how to make your own bullets)
When Vladmir calls Kerry's pathetic mouth diarheea for the bluff that it was, he's not even going to have to lift a finger. He'll just send cheap Chinese allys to f us up by the boatloads.
I don't care how tough you think you are. It's no fun getting beat up by four guys, especially when you're the only one unarmed.

That remains to be seen. The western part of the Ukraine is flapping it's wings and fluttering on the ground because Yats realizes that the west will scrape off Crimea unless something changes. Yats' only hope of getting the west involved is to escalate the situation and make it look like Putin crossed some sort of line that the west may have already discussed with him. ("We'll give you Crimea but don't...").
In any case, back to Putin.
Everything that the USA has done since the fall of the Soviet Union has been to destroy Russia. All of the inclusions of Eastern Europe into the EU is not because Eastern Europe is such a fucking great economic prize, but because once a nation is included into the EU, inclusion in NATO is soon to follow, along with missiles and troops under western control... right on Russia's border. I think we all know this, really. We either ignore it, or deny it, but we know it.
AS LONG AS WE THREATEN RUSSIA, PUTIN WILL THREATEN US. If WE STOP threatening Russia, Putin will back off. But here, this article says it far better than I can...

It was a world in which “the tide of war is receding” and the United States could, without much risk, radically reduce the size of its armed forces. Other leaders, in this vision, would behave rationally and in the interest of their people and the world. Invasions, brute force, great-power games and shifting alliances — these were things of the past. Secretary of State John F. Kerry displayed this mindset on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday when he said, of Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine, “It’s a 19th century act in the 21st century.”
That’s a nice thought, and we all know what he means. A country’s standing is no longer measured in throw-weight or battalions. The world is too interconnected to break into blocs. A small country that plugs into cyberspace can deliver more prosperity to its people (think Singapore or Estonia) than a giant with natural resources and standing armies.
