One of the poorest persons I know apparently got a disability check yesterday which should keep his family for a month.

So I'm actually not sure how much really is shut down. It could just be the postal service got it to them because it was sent before the shut down - they really live in the boondocks, so it can take a while for them to get anything. Postal Service is independently funded.

And Obamacare website and sign up is still running?

But veterans aid isn't, since that's what they're negotiating now... Unless that's more showmanship.

Frem thinks the lady who tried to attack the white house might have been upset about the WIC cards. Which is a welfare aid thing, so that could be hitting people.

It's not that I'm mocking the poor, it's more I think our government might suck, but the people can always rise to the occasion. And I also don't know yet just how bad it is right now. So I'm more wait and see than hand wringing at this point.

Plus, I mean... I'm a nihilist, an anarchist, and I've got tendency to play down concern and sympathy behind complete distaste for anything sentimental. How else was I going to react?

"I'm fascinated by the way that the righties on this board mirror exactly what Fox news spews". That's how it works these days, Magons. Right wingers like Rap only pay attention to FauxNews and right-wing talk radio; it's easiest that way, they get all the talking points they need without the inconvenience of anything that doesn't agree with the party line; then they can turn around and spew it forth all over the internet, to friends and family and places like this, which perpetuates it, and away we go. It's working great in this country, unfortunately.

Which means the check would have been cut at least a week or more ago - long before the shutdown. And as you noted, the Post Office is unaffected.

”Did you see the Giants game on Sunday? They lost 31-7. Do you know what the Giants didn’t say after that game? ‘If you don’t give us 25 more points by midnight on Monday, we will shut down the f**king NFL.’” -Jon Stewart on Republicans shutting down the government over their opposition to Obamacare

This shutdown is the fault and responsibility of the American people. It's what they chose in 2012 when the elected 234 House Republicans and one Democratic President.

Also, people seem to think an impass like this is a bad thing. Simply put, this is a fight...and sometimes you have to have a good fight to settle some business and move on. Back when I was a kid my friend and I had an argument, it festered, boiled, and ultimately we settled it with a good fight. Then we could be friends again. People are angry...as angry as they've been since the Civil War. We need a good fight like this cause the alternative might be a bad fight like that was.

Sure, in a Civil War the Republicans would kick Democratic ass...just like last time. Hell, it'll be SO much easier then last time cause the Republicans are also Southerners which means we get the best of both worlds.

Much appreciated.

Thing is, they DON'T really wanna create a third party, it's just every time the mask starts to slip and people see the sociopathic, malicious, inhumane monstrosity that the GOP truly is they slither away under a rock somewhere and insinuate themselves into some maybe-viable third party and thoroughly poison it, corrupt it, and then come all out pretending behind a new mask, with the same old neo-feudo-fascist agenda.

They did that to the Libertarians (the sharkjumping moment was installing Barr over the objections of 90%+ of the current party membership at the time), did it to what used to be Ron Pauls much more moderate faction, re-dubbing it the Tea Party, and they'll do it again the very moment they're shown so much as an ounce of mercy.
Mind you, by the time they got rolling, most of the original membership of said parties had jumped ship in disgust.

Look, quit making excuses, these assholes aren't a faction, aren't a splinter group, they're what the GOP *really is* and always has been from their very inception, and they've had the same fucking agenda since day freakin one, look at the Alien and Sedition Acts and then look at the Patriot Act and go on, tell me there's any difference ?

But one place they've crossed the rubicon here is showing their utter contempt for the ignorant backwater sodders who could usually be counted on to vote for them - large swathes of dirt-poor southern states (usually "red") have no State level backup and thus WIC was not paid, which on top of cutting SNAP leaves a damn lot of hungry, angry people, and sure, they're in general ignorant/stupid and kept that way by a party that depends on it, but it doesn't take a genius to make the connection and start throwing blame.

Even worse, you never short the palace guard if you're going to enrage the populace, and throwing their own staffers under the bus opens lots of opportunities and temptation for the political equivalent of some daggers through the curtain - wonder if Brutus was maybe not paid on time...

Anyways, the critical mistake is the same as it has always been, showing mercy to sociopaths just enables and encourages them, time after time they slither away and do it again, only worse, and sooner or later, it's going to erupt in violence BECAUSE of that foolishness, when it didn't have to go there.

*aside glance*

And this from the creep openly calling for a coup ?
Reaalllly.
The voice of sanity, you ain't, son.

That said, pleasepleaseprettypleasewithsugarontop, DO IT.
Seriously, give us an excuse to purge this continent of your insanity, and when your wacked out loud little handful gets curbstomped into oblivion by the generally moderate and responsible types who are rightly sick of you and your so-called-leaders and outnumber you fifty to one or more (we can discount liberal utopia fluffy bunnies, else it'd be seventy to one) we can maybe get on with fixing the damage, instead of letting you screwballs compound it.

Not that I consider myself generally moderate and responsible, it's just that I hate you and yours more than any other faction cause you contribute nothing, only consume all you can and poison the rest out of spite - more intelligent parasites try to achieve symbiosis, you moron.

I agree with quite a bit of of what you both said, except for this: Hero, we've already HAD this fight--several times, and I don't believe it's about "the fight" or ANY individual things. Combination of fighting against anything Obama wants, and the supposed "Tea Party" desire to make the government "smaller" (or rather, smaller of things they don't want, bigger of things they DO want). I think Frem's right about what they did to libertarians, at least insofar as the REAL Tea Party, but I don't see this as any kind of "fight" that will solve anything.

It certainly, in my opinion, is the fault of the American people for electing the idiots who are behind this, unfortunately I can't argue with that, but if so, it's what's wrong with our electoral system, not all the people. JMHO.

"if we ran things via nation-wide vote, most of this would be done, will of the people served." Damned straight. Problem is, there ARE enough of the "American people" who have either been manipulated into believing these guys are working FOR them, or are dumb enough to think a shutdown is a good thing (and most of the latter because they've been manipulated into thinking so, without knowing the facts). So again I say yes, the electoral system; if districts weren't gerrymandered (by BOTH parties) to get bad representatives in power and keep them there; if it weren't possible for a small faction of one party to screw things up like this; if money wasn't a major factor in electoral politics/advertising/etc., it would be different. But SOME of the American People did vote these guys into office, and voted to keep them there, so there's validity in that aspect of it.

As to it being after the fact, we've been through this taking-the-country-hostage bit before; if people used their brains, they'd have voted the guys who've been doing it for, what, six years?, out of office last time around. They didn't.
