Yep. Looks like I touched a nerve.

Geezer,
that was actually pretty funny. I can think of a couple others who might fit that picture, but I reckon from the response that these days, they use a spreadsheet, and reference Buffy.
That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

I'd put my Firefly knowledge up against most, even here. But , par the course for some on this board, there's some misapplying of facts and relevancy. Mal gave back the money, and a bit more, as I recall, for not completing the assignment. Crow told him to keep his money, and buy a funeral...
But correctly pointing that out doesn't in any way prove or make the point that I some how lean towards the Niska side of characters, and am less like Mal.
It's a baseless, childish and empty charge, on your part. I'd expect even y'all to know better.

Now, am I the only one here who remembers that (c)Rappy approves of torture; has absolutely no concern for the old, the young, the sick or disabled; just hates it when people loyally band together out of common cause and wants to destroy them (ie unions); and approves of anything, ANYTHING, which makes HIM money especially at someone else's expense?

I think AURaptor approves of some interrogation techniques I don't, and would quibble about whether those techniques are torture. But the other stuff seems like an unfair characterization, as the result of comments taken out of context or misinterpreted in an argument.
The most I might give you is that AuRaptor is very callous and dismissive towards some (?) Muslims, of varying ages and health, but no one but a caricature generally hates babies, children, old people, the sick, the disabled, and puppies.
Similarly, I have seen Geezer give different points of views in arguments where I've thought both sides have a point, but I don't recall ever seeing him lie. He may perhaps have been incorrect in some instances, but to lie I think he would have to not believe what he was saying, which I think he does.
However, I do think that each of us has probably at some point or another been guilty of mudslinging or unfair accusations, including myself. I distinctly recall being unfair to Niki and 1kiki, though I'd like to think I've mellowed out towards them since then.

When DIRECTLY questioned - TWICE - about the fate of the truly at risk - the old, the sick, children and the disabled - those who cannot just 'pull themselves up by their bootstraps' and survive 'by luck and pluck' on their own without active social help (which now comes nearly completely in the form of government programs) - Rap first ignored the question, then made some fatuous statement about human ingenuity. ie - they get to sink or swim without the government.
Now maybe you are fortunate enough to not know anyone disabled, seriously ill, very old, or very young and in desperate need or on the edge of survival. Good on you. I hope your life stays so blessed. It's the only way I can see how (c)Rappy's callousness about 'those people' got by you.
And if you go back and check the Wisconsin thread, you will find he really, really wants to destroy unions, AND the lives of the people who belong to them.
I'm not being unfair about his positions.

Waterboarding 3 terrorists isn't 'torture', so no, you don't remember that, because I never was for torture. Nor AM I.
;nice broken sentence you have there. Where is it that I have " absolutely no concern for the old, the young, the sick or disabled" ? Another lie, fabricated out of thin air.
Unions - sorry, you do NOT have a right to other people's money.
And making money at someone else's expense.. a continuation of the lies.
It's easy to vilify others when you make up lie after lie about them. And boy, you sure are good at it.

I am not so fortunate. Please. Please don't suggest I don't care about them, or that I don't care about the other people I've tried to save, and lost.
Spend some time building someone up into a monster, then yes, it becomes easy to deal with them. The question that defines all of us, what we do, how we act, is are we still willing to see other people as human? If we see their flaws, and the pain they inflict on others, do we still push them out of the way of danger? Do we still try to save them? Perhaps both approaches have their merits.
We are all of us just people we've met on a discussion board, we know very little about how the other people are in reality. And maybe the accusations here everyone has on occasion thrown around are harmless. Maybe they're even accurate.
But maybe, just maybe, they hurt. And maybe, they push someone further along on self-destructive paths. We can't know. When I go too far, I apologize, to try to limit the hurt I cause. I've apologized to you, 1kiki, and I've apologized to Niki.
And maybe, when I try to believe the best in people, even when sometimes I'm disappointed, maybe I'm just trying to do the only thing I can to help make this world not SUCK so much as it does.
Do as you will.

"... are we still willing to see other people as human ..."
I'd like to see all people as human, but I know I don't. The people I know well - yes, human. I would literally give my life for them if it came down to it. Some people I see who I empathize with strongly, yes human. Other people - the random bank teller, the person passing by on the sidewalk, the driver ahead of me - nope, just categories. I think our nature is to be limited in the number of people we accept **as people** into our lives. But (unlike (c)Rappy) I am willing to extend myself in an impersonal way to help others out of policy, the generic 'what goes around comes around' approach. I would go so far as to say this: I would give up everything without qualm if it would guarantee a fair humane world. And then there are people I refuse to deal with b/c they have proven to be a complete fucking waste of my time. It doesn't make them non-human, just pointless. And, when you think about life in general - some unknown span of time is all we are guaranteed. Why would I give up even the smallest part of that for someone like (c)Rappy?

And yet, here you are, doing exactly that...
