I'll take them both.

That weren't the question
...Pick one and tell me why... Pretty please...
This is serious research here...

Nandi. She is forthright and has a certain sensuality in her every movement that appeals to me. I also have a serious thing for redheads, and those green eyes are icing on a gorgeous cake. And that voice! That glorious, husky voice! Bone-melting.
Facts are stubborn things.

As characters I would choose Nandi over Inara, because she comes with less baggage. As actresses I would choose Morena over Melinda, 'cause she's the most beautiful woman on the planet.

Nandi. She's lacks pretension and is more self-reliant. And when she sees someone she wants, she doesn't waste time angsting over him.

Well reasoned, green!
So Nandi wins...for tonight?
Do you think Inara would have eventually dropped the pretention in later seasons? If whatever malady she suffered from were removed, would her character have changed?

I think that Inara would be more free to act on her feelings for Mal if she were no longer a companion. I think a lot of the pretense she puts forth would fade once she wasn't bound by Guild law. Obviously both Nandi and YoSafBridge were able to be their true selves once they had left their companion houses. Kind of makes one wonder who Inara really would be if she was allowed to come out from behind her curtain.
As to whatever the "secret malady" is that keeps lurking behind door number two, I think she should just tell everyone. Now I'm going to turn 50 on Saturday, and I've been thinking a bit on what my 50 year old self would tell my 20 year old self, and frankly, it's that all those things I thought were really scary,if other people only knew what they were....just...weren't. Truly - if she's afraid to tell the crew, it's just kind of dumb. That crew can deal with it! That crew can deal with losing her, too. That crew would help her live whatever life she's got left to the T! She'd go to her grave skidding into it sideways with a party hat on, a drink in each hand, and a smile on her face!
Mal could deal with loving and losing her if he knew it was coming. Losing Inara to the dreaded malady wouldn't be the betrayal that loving and then being betrayed by the Independants was. Letting him be in love with her and then having her die without her ever telling him would blindside him twice, and that would not be fair, nor the adult thing to do.
She just has to tell them.
And none of this is to say that I don't like Inara. I like her a lot.I wish I could buy a bity little bottle of whatever it is that she has, 'cause she sure has beauty and class in buckets full.
