Well, absolutely she shoulda said... but DRAMA!
I've had a lot of experience with dying and sympathy lately and I can safely say most people just aren't equipped for dealing with a slow death...They treat you very different. Maybe it was just her way of pretending nothing was wrong, for the time remaining...

Congrats on making it ta 50, hon! I hope it's a good ride downhill for ya...My own self will be 31 on Thursday (the 31st) so

You sound like a heckuva friend...I hope when it's my time I'll have people like that to help me ride out in style

Same here. Not so much the voice, though I'm fine w/ it, but yeah... everything else.

I'm very tired of these fights, even Firefly fights. It stops being fun at some point.

If you actually want my opinion, then PM me and I'll have a conversation with you. But if people just want to dump on one of my favourite characters, I'm out.

Any conversation about these two characters and the comparison is bound to be framed in the sense of relationships, which makes it a shipper battle. Could just be taking about appearance wise, but the dozen or so comments before suggests no, this thread is what I thought it was, because it's getting into personalities and the respective manner of interactions.

So no, it ain't a discussion, but I'm not gonna fight anymore either.

Privileged Inara. She and her guests never wait for a table at the best nightspots.

Nandi.

Both women are flawed (ALL people are flawed - let me finish) but it seems to me that Nandi has accepted her flaws and moved past them while Inara has yet to face hers. Like so many people on Serenity, Inara is running from her past. Nandi isn't running any more, which is a very attractive quality to me.

Thus, Nandi is my choice.

I like both characters, and they’re both obviously attractive ladies, but for me it comes down to respect.

Inara doesn’t go back on her word, she keeps things professional, she said she wouldn’t service crew in trade and she never does. She offers to pay Mal out of her own money, which she has saved, to help her friend.

Nandi does whatever she wants without thinking of the consequences, she trades help, for desire and sex, she hurts her friend who has come to her aide, and she really mucks things up for Mal, in regards to Inara, because she takes what she wants, juxtaposed by her sexing Mal while Inara’s assisting Simon deliver a baby. I think if she would have lived, she would have been as regretful as Mal.

So my choice would be Inara based on the respect I have for what she does, rather than what she says.

All right, I said I wasn't gonna fight and let people have their thread. And I'm still not going to, but rather than choose one of the characters, and end up bothering the fans of either or both characters or ships, I'm going to play devil's advocate and bring up some hopefully pertinent discussion points.

1) With Inara's occupation acting much like a mask, and the short time we know Nandi, and considering that both characters are viewed relative to a non-neutral perspective (Mal), can we say we really know either character well enough to compare their merits?

Do we know that Nandi has her life all figured out, when she left the core and her old personality behind, adopted a new one, and started getting into trouble left and right? The appearance of confidence is not actual proof of self-assurance - see both Mal and Inara as well for example, we are only aware of their doubts because we are given time to see them.

Do we know that Inara is pretentious, especially when later she admits that the upper class isn't really her world, and suggests she's more comfortable around the down-to-earth crew of Serenity?

2) Is it possible that these two characters are really the same at heart? Both companions, both have had their share of ...partners and therefore both "put out," both were brought up in a core lifestyle, both left that behind to go out into the unknown. Nandi left because she felt that lifestyle was constricting. We don't know yet how or why Inara left, only that her manner of departure must have been more low-key as it did not result in her being expelled from the Guild and shunned.

Inara tries to hold on to core mannerisms, while Nandi has largely abandoned them as pointless.

Perhaps Nandi originally tried to hold onto the Core and Core values as well, which is what set her against the previous owner of the Heart of Gold (who abused the women). Theoretically the only difference between them may be the amount of time they've spent on the Rim and the amount of time they've had to adjust to Rim culture.

Well, that and Inara's secret.

3) Considering that secret, can we really compare their reactions and behaviours when there's a fairly major factor that holds Inara back, that Nandi doesn't have to deal with? I actually don't think we're seeing the contrast of ice and fire personality wise here.
