HELPNATHANBUYFIREFLY.COM - Folks, it’s about time we spring the Big Damn Plan. There is a team of about 15-20 people that have been working around the clock (and around the world!) the last few days to figure out how we can make something happen, how we can make this work. To all those volunteers and to the fans who have supported us: Thank you. So many of you have been so excited and positive, and we’ve had so many amazing suggestions roll in, that we almost didn’t know where to begin. And certainly it bears saying that we’ve only been so cautious because doing it right matters more than doing it fast...

To clarify, I'm just reporting it.

I think the financing side of things would be the easier part. As long as you have Joss and the gang all saying "yes," then the money - REAL "make movie" MONEY - would roll in. Just seeing the response from Nathan's comment is proof of that. So it's not the funding, it's the rights and the actors and Joss that are the hard part.

They talk about creating a place for firefly fans to organize and communicate. Perhaps they haven't heard of the amazing fireflyfans.net?

My sentiment exactly.

I just can't see this idea working.

Saw that too. I think the writing is on the wall at this point. If people want to cling to hope then there's not much else anyone can say to sway them.

Yeah, that kinda puts the nail in the coffin.

I guess I can't say I'm surprised. It occurs to me that undermining production rights, even on a fan-funding basis, might be considered a no in the biz, especially where a lot of it seems to be based on relationships between IP owners and the studios and a hand shake. Maybe it's considered crass or something.

I mean, these people all know each other. Maybe they're not in the habit of going around behind each other's backs for franchise rights and such.

Still, damn shame. I have to admit it had my own hopes up for a while. It was nice at least to see this kind of activity, even if it made the rest of the world o.o at us.

I agree that it's nice to see this kind of activity, even if it goes no where. A fan-based effort like this is pretty much doomed to failure, so to me the important thing isn't whether www.helpnathanbuyfirefly.com succeeded... but that it got some mainstream attention for FIREFLY. I saw FIREFLY-related stories on the front page of CNN twice in a three day span. If the right decision-making TV or movie exec also saw that... Who knows?

Now that it's over I truly hope they turn all that enthusiasm into memberships on sites like FFF.net and funnel their spending desire to our charities.

Our community, that's what is the legacy of Firefly.
All the good works we do too.

Next year, it's Summer's turn to drop an innocent clue bomb...
