I don't wholly agree--or disagree--about Mal's demeanor toward Inara... but Inara's toward Mal... THAT'S what's key. Once Mal sleeps with Nandi, she shuts herself off from him emotionally. The conversation at the end of BETTER DAYS simply can't take place before HEART OF GOLD.

It's debatable that THE MESSAGE was ever supposed to be after OBJECTS IN SPACE. The episodes were actually written roughly concurrently, and the writers have admitted that when they were working on the episodes, they weren't sure what order they would air in because they didn't know how many episodes FOX would let them have (and have as much as admitted that Jayne's line was basically an editorial oversight).
It's my understanding that Whedon's plan (assuming the series wasn't getting a full season) was ALWAYS to have OBJECTS IN SPACE be the last episode. When he had the option the film more episodes, he figured he would cram as many in as he could... as long as he ended with OIS.
The "fallback plan," if the series got picked up by another network (or if FOX reversed its decision) was that the other episodes MIGHT occur after OIS... or they might not. (After all, FOX had already altered his continuity at least 2 or 3 times by that point... what's another bump in the road?).

I thought you were saying it was during the series? Heart of Gold is towards the end.
Mal and Inara are always either pulling apart or moth to flame. Always either or. It's difficult to tell anything based on behaviour towards each other, because it's not even consistent through Those Left Behind into the movie.
Well, like I was saying, it doesn't particularly matter. It's a lark.

Hmm, THAT'S interesting. I wouldn't know, I'm not in the UK. But I'm wondering if there's anything similar going on in the US.
Maybe a lot of people bought Float Out?

Doing it for a £1 ($1.48) is really cheap too - I normally pay £2.45 ($3.64) per copy of a normal comic.
