Can you actually provide an argument that the average Chinese Emperor or Turkish Sultan felt as lonely, abandoned and powerless as, say, the average plantation slave, fresh off the boat from Africa?

I also note that you listed entitled inherited elite statuses such as kings and sultans, which would never be obtainable by anyone through "success." And compared them to people forced into the most miserable of situations, who can not be personally blamed for their enslavement or for any failure (opposite condition of success) that put them there.
Perhaps the obtaining of wealth can itself be a shallow grab for status and prestige, much like having an attractive woman, or being popular, or any number of other endeavors that a person might pursue that serve as a disconnect from their reality, and which, ultimately, are temporary states, unstable and perhaps not a good foundation for long-term happiness. Now this isn't true of everyone who is popular, or who seeks riches, some of them are quite happy. But because some of them are happy and feel empowered (and often, money DOES make people feel empowered and entitled), doesn't mean that all of them are. Or that none of them have their share of troubles which can't be solved by power or money. We can't say they are ALL happy. As such, it's not a path that we can claim resolutely leads to happiness.
But, um, I've been trying to move away from this thread to let Chris-is-all have his John Carter series discussions. Perhaps it would be better to continue this conversation in the thread I split off?

I would invite you to remember that Dark Angel is one of my all-time favourite shows, and Max CERTAINLY ain't no damsel in distress!!!
Also, Wai Lin was my favourite Bond girl (Tomorrow Never Dies), and she held her own with 007.
So it's not like I seek out entertainment where women need to have their noses wiped...
