I just hope they don't try to make it all serious n stuff, that would demean it, much like the original Conan, Army of Darkness, or Battle Beyond the Stars, it just doesn't work without the large ham, side order of cheese.

Keep your drama, gimme HIGH ADVENTURE!
*hums Conan theme*

Not much chance, given the film-making climate. I predict funny/serious a' la Sherlock Holmes.

I'm just hoping they don't go all moralistic and preachy. That would ruin what could be a good adventure movie.

My Guide of "What you need to know to get you excited about John Carter of Mars..."

1. It's being directed by Andrew Stanton (Pixar's Wall E, Finding Nemo, A Bug's Life)

2. The score will be composed by Michael Giacchino (Lost, Star Trek, Ratatouille, The Incredibles, Up!)

3. The script will be written by Stanton and author Michael Chabon (Mysteries of Pittsburgh, Wonder Boys and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, which won him a Pulitzer Prize.)

4. The cast includes the following; Mark Strong, Willem Dafoe, Dominic West, Lynn Collins, Bryan Cranston, James Purefoy, Thomas Haden Church, Samantha Morton.

And finally, will share this quote from an interview with Mark Strong...

Cinematical: How has your experience been on John Carter of Mars?

Strong: It's an amazing experience. It's proving to be a fascinating jigsaw, and each moment, each line almost, fits into this vast plan that Andrew has, and he's been working on it for years. You have to have faith; you have to go in and do your stuff, because your piece of the jigsaw allows him to complete the puzzle, so I'm really enjoying it. It's a fascinating process, and I've still got quite a lot to go I'm filming for three months, the whole of March and then I've got a week or two in April, and then I'm out to Utah for a few days. So there's still plenty to go. We're right in the middle of it, but I find it fascinating. Last week I was performing in a massive warehouse with 400 extras on this floating platform in the middle of a battle between two opposing tribes, and the sequence took two or three weeks for an incredible four-and-a-half-minute sequence. It's amazing.

Do I think this will be exactly like the book?
No.
Am I excited for this?
Oh hells yeah.

So, Hollywood pablum then.

I loved the books and was young enough when I read them that I have an unfortunate, sentimental attachment to them. It's almost as bad as some of those Tekkie/er folk who can't bare to see Lucas do what he's done to his own stories. At least I recognize it. It still means I'm getting ready for a big perfunctory, Blockbuster By-The-Numbers, Hollywood style disappointment.

I disagree with the cheese and humor - there's such a high demand for suspension of disbelief with this material that if you add Funny you'll end up closer to Ice Pirates and self-parody, or some of the lesser bits of LOTR. Speaking of which, LOTR would be the tone I'd shoot for; it's fantastical to us but it needs to be very real to the actors/characters to work. imho
