Teaching in Texas I get lots of dumb country names, but this past fall I had a Cougar, who admitted he was named after John Cougar Mellencamp. I asked him why they didn't name him John. He didn't know, and then topped it off by telling me his parents were named Jack and Diane.

Oh I can think of so many others... unusual is fine as long as it's really a name...Also, please no naming your kid Candy, Taffy, Muffy, or Cissy...unless you have some sort of family tradition of being strippers....
Also, if you name your kid after a literary figure...please look up the spelling!! I have student right now named after a character in the Three Musketeers named Dartanyon ( yes they meant D'Artagnan) but they spelled it phonetically Dar-Tan-Yon

BTW Tara is a place in Ireland and it's very famous... :)But I love the idea of letting the kid in on the "other" Tara!

I don't know how well this fits here, but I had to judge a soroity/fraternity homecomin gyell contest yesterday and I had an epiphany:

the saddest thing I ever hears was when some people I knew (not riends, but they were part of our V;TM game at the time) had their baby boy, they decided to name him..

Vlad Lestat

He had a normal-ish last name, Gunther, but Vlad Lestat? For the rest of his life, people are going to be asking him if his parents were lame-o vampire wannabes... and he's going to have to say yes if he wants to be honest. lol. Couldn't even call him Vladimir, which at least would have looked pretty cool, he got hung with just "Vlad". Can you imagine calling a fat, cuddly little four year old Vlad??? I can't.

both of my daughters are named after Diana Rigg, who I had a major crush on as a young man.
The older is Helena- Rigg played that role in a TV production of Midsummer Night's Dream in the late 60's.
The younger is, of course, Diana, born during the years of the Princess.
My wife, wonderfully understanding woman that she is, jokes that if we'd had a third, we would have named it Emma, after Mrs. Peel.

Tara is also a deity in Buddhism; I knew a girl named Tara when I was a child; her mom was Buddhist.
Speaking of Buddhist names, I took an order from a woman named 'Nirvana' once, though she said her parents weren't Buddhist. So that's pretty weird.
My mom says she knew a girl in college named Nancy Ann Cianci. *shudder*
I heard so many crazy odd names working for the answering service, but none of them are popping to mind. A lot of it was the last names, though. Like 'Smallcock'. So not kidding.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

I grew up in the Milwaukee, WI area. Many of the towns, cities & lakes have Native American names. For example, Milwaukee generally translates to "pleasant land" or "gathering place [by the water]" (its on the western edge of Lake Michican).

I was back home visiting a few years back, and stopped in a store. I was stunned by the name tag of one of the store employees:

Wakeesha. Milwaukee is next to the city of Waukesha. Granted the emphasis of the girl's name is the second syllable, and not the first as in the city name, but still... Made me shudder just a little.

I'd rather be a smartass than a dumbass...

In the Indiana vein:
I don't like it when people name their kids Scout or Jem in honour of To Kill a Mockingbird. Her name was Jean Louis. Her nickname was Scout. His name was Jeremy. His nickname was Jem. And all those poor little Atticus' running around.

The Supreme Court Justice suggestion is good. It's jarring to see the news items with "civil rights lawyer Tiffany..." now.

Remember when Roots was on and all those boys got named Kunte Kinte and Chicken George?

See never name your children after a fictional character if you cannot find the name in a standard book of baby names...
I remember a story from Bruce Campbell's bio about signing a book for a kid named Ash who was well and truly pissed at his parents for naming him that:)

In college I worked in a customer response center where we collected odd names. I had quite the list. My two faves were Howdy Tickle and Princycessazatha Gainer. They were frequent customers so I saw their names quite a bit.
