The first time I saw Serenity, I had a meltdown.
Creatively, Joss made the movie he wanted to make, and he took the story to the point it would have been by Season 3. Serenity is a beautifully crafted and performed film... but it is not the movie that was going to give us the best chance of launching the "franchise". From a guerilla marketer's point of view, I knew we were in trouble.
When it was first announced that the movie would be made, I remember thinking, "Oh please don't kill any of the crew in the first movie. Let's have a movie that all the fans can celebrate, then reach out and build a wider audience. Then, if'n you want to go killin' folk... do it in the second movie... the one Tim is going to direct. After all, that's sorta his thing."
Again, this is from the point of guerilla marketer's point of view, but also as a fan who, like us all, went through so much grief over the loss of Firefly. I'd had my fill of grief and loss. We had our crew and ship back. Spiritually, I wanted to see everyone make it, we were reclaiming our 'Verse. There are so many more stories to tell, and we didn't get the time we should have with our crew... all of them.
Oh well. The Good Fight continues...

I first saw Serenity at the NCBDMPP (North Carolina Big Damn Movie Premiere Party) as a relative newcomer (saw the series, enjoyed it but wasn't hooked). What hooked me was seeing Serenity in a theater full of Browncoats. The vibe from the crowd was one immense joy and excitement. And Wash's death was one of the most remarkable things I'd ever seen in a theater. The entire audience was shocked and dumbfounded. Some may not have liked it, but all accepted it. I've yet to see a movie with that kind of crowd response.
Now, well... Here I am.

my last day of a longish career in after school care/vacation care...older kids and some coworkers crying , younger kids and some coworkers moping or getting mad at me for no good reason. (I think I may have shed some tears when no one was looking). I bought the Serenity DVD which came out that day, to cheer myself up, and went straight to the bloopers. laughed sooo hard I bit my tongue pretty badly. that whole "dirt nap with baby Jesus" routine is one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

Saw it openeing day with friends. Was psyched, wearing a Serenity print T shirt I made, saw a few browncoats smattered around. Went in, was enjoying the movie (even if some things like character and story line seemed off) then Wash's end came and the rest of the movie was a blur. I watched the whole of it but I just kept muttering "He killed Wash.... He killed Wash...." My friend turned and said it's ok but....
Left the theater numb and angry and ripped into the whole Wash episode..... I am still bitter and still really am not sure if I want another movie after that. Book was bad enough (I wanted to see more of him as well and his death seemed so anti-climatic and sad) but Wash was too much.
Still bitter about it. Always will be I guesse. If you kill anyone off next movie Joss, get rid of Simon, K? Then I can enjoy the rest of the movie.

Joss killed off Wash just 'cause he could. It was not necessary to the story at all, just a frivolous death that somehow worked for Joss. I also think it was his way of sending a message to Browncoats...that this movie is it...no more. Without Wash I just can't think of more Firefly.
