Give me BACK smokers covering me with second hand smoke! I could always deal with that...but now there is a new, more disgusting habit permeating America...called rude & obnoxious cell phone users. Everywhere I go....bank, supermarket, elevators, stores, etc. there are guaranteed to be people on cell phones completely oblivious to anyone else around them....talking loud, screaming, using vulgarity, and generally worsening the quality of life in America. There must be laws passed someday to protect people from this epidemic of rudeness and incivility. If not laws, then certainly stores & restaurants would be wise to advertise that they're cell-phone free. I think that'll be the next big thing. Who wants to go somewhere to relax or have fun, or just handle your daily chores of life with some foul-mouthed, loud, obnoxious idiot retard screaming into a phone behind you?

I happen to enjoy people being loud and obnoxious in public..it is hilarious, however I can see how it would bother you in a restaurant and such. As far as people talking on cell phones, just pretend they are talking to another person next to them, and the reason you can't hear the other is because that person is talking back using telepathy. Works for me.

I'm not surprised with your feelings on this Kaneman....I suppose these phone-jerks are a reality that I'm just gonna have to learn to live with as part of this new f'd up world, although there are many times I wish I had gone to karate training classes instead of college, 'caused I'd sometimes like to confront the worst offenders.

The answer, of course, is to drive them crazy in return.

Scenario #1:

CellPhoneEater: "Yeah, so I was talkin to Shauna and she says, you know..."

Me: "What? What's that you said?"

CPE: (looks annoyed, turns away)

Me: (runs around to get in front of CPE) "I'm sorry, I just can't hear you. What was that you were saying?"

CPE: (spins around again)

Me: (Chases CPE in a circle, getting louder and louder) "I'm so sorry, I didn't understand that. WHAT DID YOU SAY??"

CPE: "Get away from me, you weirdo lady! I'm talkin to my friend here!"

Me: "Ooooooooh." (Disappointed slump) "I thought you were talking to me. I'm sooooo lonely. I was HOPING you were talking to me." (pause) "Well, maybe if you just want to talk to your friend, you should do it SOMEPLACE ELSE."

Scenario #2:

CellPhoneEater: "Yeah, so I was talkin to Shauna and she says, you know..."

Me: (I grab my OWN cell phone, flip it open, and start talking loudly on it like we're having a conversation, looking right at her.) "You're kidding!? No WAY! I can't believe that!!"

Okay, so I haven't actually DONE either of these but I have been so tempted, except my children would kill me if I tried it. I sure would like to, though.

I can easily handle people being rude in public. The part that distresses me is them being *unsafe*. I can't count how many times I've almost been killed by a driver who was paying more attention to the conversation on his/her cell phone than to driving.

Well...you get into the driving aspect and it only gets geometrically worse. Some states have banned them on the road and I applaud them....not here in Florida...as if we needed more shitty drivers here...we already have an over-abundance of lunatic maniacs out there already...ya know what I mean?...people who drive like they're in a race, weaving in & out, cutting people off w/o signaling...in other words, people willing to risk everyone else's life on the road just so they can get somewhere 5 minutes faster...it gets me pissed and makes me sick, and I see it every day commuting on the dreaded 595 to Fort Lauderdale.

I've seen a few cute little 'no cell phone' signs at Subway. I'm sure the trend will spread. Cell phone use while driving here hasn't been banned, but it is illegal to drive without a hands-free, which seems to make it a bit better (most horrible drivers I've seen have not been talking on their cell phones or hands-frees) and the theaters are obsessed with keeping the 'silence cell phones and pagers' screen up for at least two minutes straight.
I have yet to hear someone screaming profanities into a cell phone, myself, but I have no doubt it happens a lot.
Did you read Nathan Fillions blog about cell phone use in restaurants? Hilarious stuff.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

My twist is that they're schizophrenic, and it all makes sense then. The reason it's proabably still going to piss me off forever though is because I remember the days when cell phones first came out. I paid $500 at Weinstocks for a big old Motorola Bag Phone, and paid .25 cents a minute for service, $1something for roaming. The only people who could afford that were fancy pants folks who would look down thier nose at you while they proudly displayed thier snobby phones.....signed Old Man MalBad

Ah...you're refering to the " Gordon Gekko " phones....I had one of them, weighed 97 pounds & I used to keep it sticking out of my back pocket...and yes 20 years ago it was pretty cool, now it's like Chinese...every low-life speaks it.

Right, because we all know that the answer to any given problem is to legislate. Where's the eye-roll emoticon when you need it?

Don't know how other people do, but here's the rule of thumb that I've adopted: don't talk on a cell phone unless you're in a place where a pay phone could be. Table in a restaurant: out. Front lobby of a restaurant: fair game. Mostly, of course, I just ignore them. Unless it's in a movie theater. I'm a nice guy, really, but I look mean. I rarely take advantage of that fact--but for cell phones in movie theaters, I make an exception.
