I believe that the baby that has the most potential to benefit society deserves to live the most. How one would determine that is unknown to me, but I'm sure someone will find a way.

Have you been around a baby recently? Little sibling, niece, nephew? Close friend's baby?

Because, I think it's entirely possible to be unable to assign value to a creature so innocent based on something like skin color, even if people carry an amount of prejudice around with them when it comes to persons who are older.

(Mind you, I know some people can assign value like that, but you have to allow for the possibility that some can not, and it's not just PC blather.)

Maybe you're trying to make a relevant point with your question, but in that case it's probably poorly phrased because it entirely discounts context. People don't randomly walk around assigning rights to live to babies.

Ask them who they'd save from a burning house - their neighbor's kid or a stranger's - and you'll probably start getting results about assigning subjective value.

No, I wasn't drunk, and I did ask this question to see if you were all just as pissed off by the stupid question as I was. I was taking a drive yesterday and as I was zooming through downtown Seattle when I saw this huge billboard with black and white photos picture of a White, a Black, and a Asian baby, and underneath the White Baby it said $15,000, under the Asian Baby it said $10,000, and underneath the Black Baby it said $2,500. I stopped the car and it took me a moment to figure out that it was an ad about adoptions. has anyone SEEN this add in their town? It's disgusting!!! I guess the people who started this ad was just as disgusted as me, and now I start this thread and some of you are disgusted, but don't be disgusted by me, so do me a favor... Write a letter along with me to the adoption agencies in your town and ask them what the hell is their story?

Besides, I haven't had a drink since I woke up on the floor Saturday morning, and I'm a little crazy but I'm no idiot.

Because its a sad fact of life. People say that you can't put monetary value on a human life, but, as monetary value on anything is all in peoples' heads, you can assign material value to anything, even babies.

Now, I'm not saying that this is right, just that it is a fact of life. As for the different values on the different races, that is simple economics. There are more black babies in the adoption system than white or asian babies. This is due to a combination of causes that I'm not going to get into right now, but that's the way it works. Also, because a higher percentage of blacks than whites are impoverished, less blacks are looking to adopt. When people adopt, a lot of times, they will adopt a baby of the same race to avoid any complications that might arise from having a child of a different race. Combine this attitude with the statistics for parents looking to adopt, and you get a huge amount of unwanted minority babies, hence the lower price (suply and demand).

It's not a racism problem. Its just the screwed up way the system works.

Wow, is that all? I know that Chinese adoptions (supposedly done because of a shortage of American babies) cost in excess of $25,000, I had assumed that supply and demand meant that US children where more expensive.

Realistically the colour of the baby is unimportant, every human child has the potential to be whatever he or she wants to be with love, support and a decent education.

I have no idea what ad you’re talking about, so I don’t know if I’d be angry about it or not, but based on just how you describe the ad, I’d say that it could be a reference to the typical out-of-pocket expenses for adopting children. Of course total expenses, regardless of the race of the child is going to be high – 10s of thousands. But then there’s financial aid, which helps to defray the lawyer and adoption agency fees and travel expenses. I’m not sure why, or if, adopting black children is typically defrayed with higher financial aid, but it may have something to do with the average income of black households being smaller then the average income of white households. Basically, this is probably a statistical phenomenon; if it's real at all. The actual cost of adopting a white child is probably very comparable to that of adopting a black child.

Well, there are already thousands of 'em and I don't think they are helping anyone take over the world any time soon. The only people I think being helped by their existence are the Pharmaceutical company reps that sell ADD drugs. On a more serious note...We always could tie them together with barbed wire, line them up along the Mexico border....It just may stem the flood of illegal immigrants.......Their value would skyrocket.....

Did you read the entire thread? Cos if you had, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be calling River a racist. She was just trying to inspire some moral outrage because of the ADVERTISEMENT she had seen about the costs of adopting babies according to their race. She wasn't saying that she valued caucasians over asians or african-americans, she was just attempting to make people think about the situation.

The question does not make her a racist. If she had said, "I rhink the white baby has more value", or "all Asian babies should be drowned at birth necause they are useless" or "Only black babies deserve to live because they have more value" - THEN she would have made a racist statement or asked a racist question.

You have a problem with what she said. Fine, but do not use labels that are uncalled for.

Yes it is easy to interpret the post as racist, but there really isn’t anything overtly racists in the post, so I think it’s only fair to take the author at her word that it wasn’t intended to be racist.

There is, however, nothing surreptitious about the stupidity of the question, but I don’t think it was racist.

Well if River didn't write the billboard, then she isn't racist is she? She is a person with moral outrage. But whoever wrote the billboard is. What are we disagreeing about?

That Billboard was very stupid. I mean placing monatary value next to a child of different colors to show how much they cost to adopt!? The people here in Seattle are not amused and that ad served it purpose because we are talking about it. As far as ME being racists... I don't waste my time hating one particular race when they all collectively get on my nerves. I say nuke the whole planet and let God sort 'em out.

Okay, you still aren't paying attention to the thread as a whole. River asked the question to provoke a response, not to indicate that one race was better than another. If you would read on, she explains that she was outraged by the billboard, and wanted to see the reaction of others. She said it was "troll country material", because it is a topic that was likely to bring the trolls out to offend everybody.

Trust me, while lacking in tact, River isn't a racist. You are either not paying attention to what everyone has said, or you are being stubborn because you don't want to admit that you are wrong. If the former is true, THEN READ THE FUCKING THREAD!!! If the latter is true, then you just need to get over yourself and admit that you misinterpreted the situation.

I live in Australia- so I hadn't heard of that billboard. I couldn't imagine it being allowed here.

That's ok. I think we all agree on not liking the billboard. I think I skipped past River's comments becauase it started with "no I wasn't drunk..". Alcohol is the problem- I tend to pass all comments about the alcohol.

I haven't had a beer for 3 weeks. That's probably why.

Because, I think it's entirely possible to be unable to assign value to a creature so innocent based on something like skin color, even if people carry an amount of prejudice around with them when it comes to persons who are older.

I completely agree with this, and yes I was around a friend recently who just had a baby. I got to hold the child and I couldn't believe that at one point all of us were small and helpless like that child I was holding. Also yes you are right. I think it would be difficult to assign a dollar value to the life of a child, and this is coming from someone who just recently (scroll up and read) said she would have no problem "nuking the planet and letting god sort 'em out" This is why I found that ad so offensive, and it also made me wonder if we are placing monetary value on adoption children based on race, we must also being doing the very same thing regarding adults.

I see this a lot with job hirings and I have to ask why was the more qualified Mr X who just happens to be Black was not hired, but Mr. Y was hired. The answer I get back was that they thought that Mr.Y would fit in more here. Mr. Y happened to be Chinese, and it turned out that his being less qualified wasn't the issue with them. They felt that they would get along better with him and have something in common. Fine, but getting along was not what I was looking for. Doing a specific job was. Once I found out about that I put a stop to it and canned Ms. Bitch for her lack of vision. It makes you wonder just how much of that nonsense is going on out there in this here world. A lot of people do this consciously or unconsciously (did I spell that right?) by assuming just because a person is of another color, or religion, or gender, and it also goes by what WE are comfortable with, but it is the human way. An unspoken sense of value. An unspoken sense of which race or sex is more or less deserving.

I'm guilty of this when it comes to men. I immediately assume a man doesn't have the focus like women do, but I've been proven wrong on that one time and time again, but still when the wire, crunch comes, I again assume the woman is better for the job and I devalue the man. Later when thinking about it I realize what I've done and right the wrong, but most of the time I don't, so I am just as guilty. Seeing that billboard was a reminder to me just how shallow we humans are including myself, but placing the value and worth on who is deserving and less deserving on children before they ever even reached the age of choice and action, was just a little too much for me to stomach. I hope you understand.

Having been interested at one point in adopting, my wife and I looked into it. Very few white babies out there for adoption; long waiting lists. Most have to go through private agencies. Babies of color, you can generally adopt through public agencies. I have to imagine the costs are much less thru the public agencies. We became quite discouraged by the whole baby adoption process through that mechanism; and instead took foster children. We ended up adopting an 11 year old girl.

I'm not clear on what -point- of that billboard that River saw was; was there anything on the billboard besides the quoted 'price tag'. No such bill board in our area.
