angel finished much better than it started, but was nonetheless a very pale comparison to any buffy season...
and imo spike should have had hist last moment of buffy glory.... and no more.

buffy was sexiest in season 2/3. I have this theory that it's when her hair's curly that she's a bitch, which started midway through season 4, about the time she was getting together with riley. then season 5, nasty over-coiffed ringlettes, therefore: bitch. season 6, whiny bitch, mean to spike until she gets it cut, then she's not so bad, and 7 it was mostly straight I think and she was nicer then too. see? airtight

Well, I'm all about two-dimensional and surface-y, so maybe that's one reason I didn't stick with Dark Angel too long--Alba's never really done much for me. Just a pale imitation of Dushku...

Throw in Damage and Lineage, along with Hamilton, Lindsey, and Spike, S5 of Angel wins, no contest.
And I can't state enough how much I love Not Fade Away. In my opinion one of most powerful pieces of television ever made. Both Chosen and Not Fade Away are fantastic statements regarding the themes of their respective series: Buffy overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds, Angel's never ending struggle for redemption. For me,the reason I've most seen stated for disliking Not Fade Away (lack of closure) is the reason I find it so compelling. There is no beating the Big Bad, because the bad just keeps coming. How you face it is the important thing. "If nothing we do matters, all the matters is what we do."
By contrast Chosen, while a fitting end for Buffy and superb reitteration of its feminist themes, rings a bit hollow for me, mainly because the First Evil is not something beatable. It's an intangible, a part of life, and you don't beat life, you deal (an issue dealt with wonderfully in S6).
I guess that's my long winded way of saying I liked Angel's finale more because it's a stronger commentary on the human condition, and it really emphasizes how much Angel has grown over the course of the series. He's no longer seeing his struggle as something with an end, a goal, but as a process, something to be confronted every day.

I didn't say destroyed or permanently defeated. By beaten I didn't actually mean gone. I'm talking about that idea that evil is something you can just lock away in a hole and not worry about anymore. Sure, Buffy has to end on a win, because that's what the show is about, and I'm not saying it's a bad way to go. It's just not as powerful a statement to me as Not Fade Away, that's all.
