BUFFY BRACKETOLOGY - Round 7

We’re here. I’m writing this immediately after having finished Round 6. I’ve seen the two remaining eps 6 times over the years and that’s just as part of this bracketology. That doesn’t count the amount of times I’ve seen them just in watching the show. Point being I think I can go straight into it without doing my usual procedure of watching the two competing episodes back to back.
10. The Body (5-16) vs. 18. Fool for Love (5-07)
Winner: The Body
Since these two are fresh in my memory and by now you know why I think these two episodes are great, I don’t think I have to go into a lot of detail. So I’ll just say this—“The Body” wins because it’s transcendent. It’s great drama whether you’re a hardcore fan like me or someone who has never heard of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. You’d have to explain why Anya is so out of touch with human behavior and why there’s a vampire at the end, but otherwise there isn’t anyone who couldn’t see this episode is unprecedented in how it dramatizes (and how well it dramatizes) dealing with the sudden death of a loved one.
See, that wasn’t so hard, was it? It only took close to 9 years. And such an off-the-wall choice for winner, right? Who would have thought it would end up being “The Body”?! Only the episode that every single Buffy poll ever ranks as No.1.
My final thought is while this system is only useful for determining a No.1, I can also say it worked for finding 2 and 3 as well. So…
1. The Body
2. Fool for Love
3. Once More, With Feeling
If I were to rank all the episodes 1 to 144, “The Zeppo” would probably not come in at 4, but it would definitely make the top 10. Maybe someday I will do a full ranking but I have other things to procrastinate about too, y’know.
