I truly believe that the vast majority have the whole notion backwards. I figure if you have survived to the accidental anniversary of your birth day, well, that's nice for ya. I send my mother gifts on my birthday anniversaries. I mean, really, what she had to go through to bring me into this world, sheesh! And: ouch! I expect that those of you with first hand experience with pregnancy and childbirth might be at least a little inclined to agree with me.
A fanciful ideal would be to give all mothers a paid vacation day on the birthdays of each of their children. Twins earn two days, and so forth.
I concede that there's a problem with how wee bairns are to summon the means to throw parties for and gift their mothers. Maybe stick with celebrating birthdays for the person whose birthday it is until they are on their own? Dunno.
My mom thinks I'm weird. In a good way, eh?
As to the wee bairns, I refer you to the common money pool that RIMG referred to.
I've been to more than one "kids" party where the adults in the background merely used it as an excuse to eat, drink and be merry. I have mixed feelings about that. I don't think alcohol should be excluded from the adult menu, however, I also don't think it's very adult to get bombed at a kid's party. For the record, that was back in the days when I was less adult in my adulthood.
Edit #1:
*Double take*
Did Mav just say she competed in the Wet T-shirt contest yesterday? How did I miss that???
Edit #2:
The Great Void has been filled!!! Magda is BACK!!

Ah there's my Magda. I sent you an email big sis.
Ok at this point I really need that coffee backpack. Or a coffee IV as I've had 4 hours sleep. Luckily my coffee place is doing my favorite candy cane mocha this month and I have the largest one they sell...that should last a few hours:)
Birthdays- oh I love parties and presents especially if I get to buy them for someone and be there to watch them open it. There is nothing more fun and wonderful than buying presents for people!!!

BIG HUGS for the amazing Magda..now go check your email. LOL
As a corollary to our ponder about celebrating birthdays...What was your favorite birthday present??
Mine was the white gold and sapphire ring my daddy bought me for my 18th birthday:)Not so much for it's actual value, but for the fact that my dad spent so much time picking it out and had it engraved just for me with "count only the happy hours."

And I do believe you've been following its advice ever since...
Edit:

MsQ doesn't do yellow gold, but she's more into silver than white gold though that could be an economic thing...Nahhhh. And lemme see, sapphire. Hmmm. Something about that I can't remember. But really any jewel will do. She likes shiny (not Firefly inspired...) and colorful things. Pretty sure you're on that page, eh, MsG?

MSG, oddly enough, one of the most memorable birthday gifts I got was also a very destructive one. For my 16th birthday, I was given a 1967 Canadian Centennial .30-30 Wincchester rifle. It was my first "real" rifle that was mine and mine alone. I had been shooting since I was able to stand, but this was a milestone, if that makes any sense.
JQ, we guys may need to see that list for MSG...or are you going to not play fair and keep it for yourself?
