When Mickey said that it always comes down to thet parts, I definitely thought of Out of Gas, but I didn't think that they were doing it on purpose.

But they are known for making references to other sci-fi stuff. (The funniest one is when the Doctor admits he's met Arthur Dent, but I think that's because Adams wrote for Doctor Who back in the day.)

While I think the similaritiies between Dr Who`s `Girl in the Fireplace` and Firefly`s `Out of Gas` are at best superficial, after watching the first two episodes of Torchwood last night it struck me how much Russel Davis`s writing is similar to Joss`s.
There was a very Buffy/Angel feel to the whole thing except it was set in Cardiff and with aliens instead of deamons.

The jury's still out for me as far as Torchwood goes.

As a Dr Who crossover, I don't think it works, but as a stand alone sci-fi drama series, it's pretty good. I also like the way they can deal with issues that wouldn't get on a pre-watershed program (the whole second episode for example, and the very graphic headshot in the first). The writing does, however, look like something Joss would come up with.

Haven't seen Torchwood yet as we're just now getting series 2 of the doctor here and I don't know if sci-fi or bbcamerica will carry torchwood.

Not only that, I've been hearing vague rumours about another Dr Who spin off, this time centered around Rose and Mickey.

Personally, I think that one is not going to be as good, but we'll have to see if it even happens.

Do`nt know about that one but there has been a couple of rumours about a new series called `Sara Jane Investigates` featuring Sara Jane Smith and K9.
It all sounds to me a bit like a pilot episode they made years ago called `K9 and Company` which never went in to a series, perhaps with the success of Dr Who they`ve decided to dust off this old idea and give it another go.

Incidently, are you yanks getting the `Tardisodes`.
These were short additional scenes/trailers for each season 2 episode, downloadable over the internet or over mobiles. (and not, as you might at first think, some short of strange disease).
The `Girl in the Fireplace` one for example gives you a bit more background on what happened to the ship`s crew.

I think you can still find them on the BBC Dr Who site.

I must say, in watching this episode, in no way did my thought process jump to Firefly. Of course, that could just be because I'm having so much fun watching David Tennant as the Doctor. I was disappointed when I found out that Christopher Eccleston wasn't signed on for season 2, but man have they proved me wrong! Oh, and did anyone see David as Casanova on Masterpiece Theatre? As the Doctor would say..."Fantastic!".

I didn't think of Firefly when I was watching 'Girl in the Fireplace', but I was reminded of Firefly a lot when I was watching the two part story 'The Impossible Plant'/ 'The Satan Pit' later in the season. It'd be interesting to see what people think when it's shown in the US.

David Tennant is fun to watch. Love him as the Doctor.

There are definate similarities there, with that two parter they were going for a `down and dirty` look for future space travel in the design of the sanctuary base.
When you got a good look at the ship though, it had more of a `50`s Sci Fi/V2/Dan Dare look to it than anything seen in US made SF series in recent years, and overall the primary influence in this story is obviously `Aliens`.
