Chrisall, you may be insane...for asking the question. On choice, I just don't agree.

Okay. Hush, The Body and Restless are all amazing shows, but I feel like they almost cheat as contenders because they are each so unique, not only as Buffy shows but for TV overall. Same with Once More With Feeling. These shows are in their own league. I agree with whoever said that The Body contends for best television ever, but somehow I feel the best BUFFY episode needs to be very much in the realm of Buffy, if that makes sense.

Having said all that, my answer is:

Passion.

Because it has everything. It is beautifully shot and scripted from beginning to end. It is dark, funny and heartbreaking. And part of what makes it work is the voiceover, but I consider that too commonplace disqualify it.

Is it a safe assumption that you love Spike?

This IS a tough question, because the vast majority of Buffy eps aren't stand-alone espisodes, but part of a larger, longer story arc. My personal favorite is probably "Once More With Feeling" - but I wouldn't choose that as the one to show someone who'd never been properly inducted (er, I mean *introduced*!) into the show. OMWF has too many subtleties that only the Buffyphiles (Buffynistas?) would get; certain words and gestures, the fact that each word, note, and song was crafted for its singer, and so on.

Nope, not OMWF. If I could only choose one episode that would have to stand by itself as a testament to the greatness that was Buffy, that would be put into a time capsule as an example of what was RIGHT with television in the 90s, it would have to be "Hush". You can see that episode without knowing a thing about the show, and it can still entertain you, make you laugh, and completely creep you out, often in the same breath.

"The Body" is also one of the finest pieces of television I've ever seen, but like OMWF, it needs to be appreciated within its larger story arc.

So for me, it's Hush.

Gonna go with Dopplegangland, or Once more with feeling, but I'm sorry, I can't pick just one...

That's not tough. It's Hush.
I mean I also love The Wish and OMWF (and Becoming ,and Who Are you, etc etc)
But Hush is my favorite because I never watched Buffy at first until I caught the original airing of Hush--and I was hooked--well more like obsessed.
