Misunderstood moments in the series or movie

I came across a few things I misunderstood and felt pretty stupid when I finally fiqured out what was going on:

1. When River cuts Jayne at the beginning of "Ariel" I thought she did it because she knew he was going to betray them. After watching it for about the fifth time I realized the shirt he was wearing had a Blue Sun logo and thats exactly where she cut him.

2. In "War Stories" Wash and Zoe are arguing and Wash says: "What this marriage needs is one less husband". I was in shock for about ten minutes because I thought he meant they should split up. It was much later in the episode I realized he was talking about Mal being a third leg.

3. In the BDM River is locked up in the pantry and suddenly wakes up. Jayne immediately goes in to take her for a "nice shuttle ride". At first I thought she had given him a psychic nudge to get him in there. Since she has never displayed this ability I'm now of the belief that she woke up because she sensed his intent.
To be honest I'm still not sure about this one.

So anyone else have any duh-huh moments?

Another instance in River's anti-Blue Sun behavior is in "Shindig." If you look closely, the crackers and cans that she's laying waste to all have the Blue Sun logo on them. Hmm...

I misunderstood (literally) one of Summer's lines in the BDM on first viewing. It's in the locker scene with Simon. River says (I thought):

"But I'll show them! Oh God..."

It seemed sort of strange -- this broken, handcuffed girl seemingly thumbing her nose at the crew. Nyah nyah, I'll show you!

But I mis-heard the line. What she actually says is:

"What I'll show them! Oh God..."

In other words, she's becoming aware of the Miranda secret, and that it's about to be revealed. She's whimpering because she doesn't want the others to have to go through the pain she's been enduring. Hence her followup line: "Things are going to get much much worse."

What a difference a single word can make!

By the way, I'm not the only one to make this mistake. It's wrong in the subtitles too! The correct line is given in the script in the Visual Companion.

Actually I always assumed that Wash meant that he thought Zoe was being more of the 'man'(as in the strong one who protects, fights, etc) of the relationship. And he, being the physical man, wanted her to be more like a woman.

I just didn't understand in the BDM why Simon was still so uptight about River. She's proven herself competent (for the most part) and Mal has proven himself over and over again. In 'Bushwacked' when he doesn't give them up, in 'Ariel' and 'Safe' when he comes back for them.

You're on my crew...Why're we still talkin' about this...

Remember that time has passed between the series and the BDM, about 8 months if I recall.

Perhaps something happened during that time to make Simon more conscious of Mal's handling of them. There might have been close calls with the Alliance, more bounty hunters like Jubal Early.

We'll never know... 'til the second series airs in 2007 (dropping massive hint to the studios!).

There's more to this scene in the script (visual Companion) River has been awake. She was in cuffs. She has climbed up to the light, pealed back a piece of hard wire covering the lights, and used it to pick her cuffs. Hence the whole no cuffs after that scene. and why she's up by the light. It was more than, "ambush Jayne 'fore he throws me in a shuttle." It's possible Jayne started towards the pantry because he heard her moving.

hmmm, i guess i never realized that people had such different interpretations of that line between Wash and Zoe. I had always assumed that he was talking about Mal when he says one less husband. For a split second(literally), i thought he meant himself, but i quickly realized that he was talking about Mal. That makes the most sense to me. He's angry with Zoe for always answering to Mal. He seemed to think that her loyalties lied with Mal and that she always sided with him when he felt that maybe every once in a while she should side with the man she is married to. He feels that Mal is a the third partner in the relationship because Zoe has so much loyalty to him. I saw it as Wash questioning whether her loyalty lied with her husband or her captain.

PS - I loved "War Stories". What a great episode. I loved it for many reasons. It gave real drama to Zoe and Wash's relationship. Something that every true relationship has, it isn't fantasy. I also loved the torture scene and how crude Mal was when trying to keep Wash from slipping away. I also loved when Zoe comes in and has absolutely no hesitation when she chooses Wash over Mal. And then Wash talking about how crazy Mal is, and how he wouldn't give up. Great episode.

Exactly, a later scene in War Stories confirms this. As Wash complains to Mal : " No (she didn't vow to honor obey), but that's just it, you she obeys. There is obeying going on."

Wash is upset that Zoe defers to Mal in ways that she would never defer to him. That her first loyalty is to Mal.
