Theater Counts for this Weekend (Oct 21st)

To put things into perspective: "Into the Blue" had a production budget of $50 mil. Worldwide gross-- $18 mil. "Elizabethtown"-- $54 mil budget. After being panned by critics, think it will make its money back? I don't mean to raise "Serenity" by putting down others, but my point is, it could have been much worse. Universal definitely impressed with production values. Perhaps "Wonder Woman" will be a smash hit (and why wouldn't it be?) and Serenity will get greenlit as a pet project. One cas always dream.

I haven't checked the Silver City near my house, but it is playing in the two "second hand" theatres near me. It's sad that it's losing theatres, but maybe in the cheaper places more people will take the risk and go see it. One can always hope.

Isn't Wonder Woman at Warner Bros movie? If it does exceptionally well, Whedon's name will be more powerful, but wouldn't it be better if he were to make a highly successful movie for Universal in order to improve Serenity's chances?

Well, the loss of theaters was a shock to me, I live about 20 miles outside of Atlanta, and Serenity is playing this weekend at every theater within 30 miles of me. Hopefully it will make money since it's up against movies that haven't gotten reviewed well. It really does have wide appeal, if people would just GO see it...my husband and I are 23 and 25, and our parents who are in their 50's loved it as much as we did...people just aren't going for whatever reasons but maybe this weekend it'll do okay despite the loss of theaters.

There's a whole mess of new movies coming out Friday, such as DOOM and the like. Not any surprise that SERENITY would be pushed aside for the new meat.

Yup. There's just been too many movies coming out this month that open in more than two thousand theaters (each week there have been at least three and most times four). When you couple that with the two week contracts you get stuff like Domino absolutely bombing but 2200+ theaters can't drop it yet. In retrospect, Serenity actually had an okay hold last week. The per theater average went down but the per screen average was decent. All of the theaters in my area that were showing it on two screens dropped it to one - so the actual number of screenings went way down even though the theater count dropped only modestly. This week, even though we lost more theaters, we lost less screenings than last week.

If I was Universal, I would seriously consider greenlighting a Serenity 2 very soon on a bit lower budget (~$30 million). If they follow it pretty close on the tails of this BDM they're almost guaranteed to make another decent profit--they know that the fanbase is more dedicated than that of a typical sci-fi film and that they'll come back in force for another, and the movie also gathered a lot of new converts. So betting on the property again--as long as it's fairly soon so it's fresh in people's memories--would probably be pretty solid in terms of bringing in a little more revenue. With as many movies as are bombing or not doing very well lately, and as poor as the box office receipt has been in general, any safe bet is a good one in the moviemaking business. Serenity 2 is obviously a pretty safe bet.

If the movie does as well as or better than expected on DVD, I would not be surprised at all if we get a shiny announcement from Joss that he's been asked to do another. Guess we'll just have to wait and see, though.

My Bride and I went to the movies last night... She saw North Country. I saw Serenity again. (She loves the series and the movie - but she's not as rabid as I am.) There were more folk in my theater than in hers... It's not over yet.

On the way home we had a conversation about how well "Serenity II" might do and came to the same conclusion as AeroB did. Our BMD has had pretty good legs - and once the folks who always wait for the DVD are converted - Serenity II could open with a bigger box office than Serenity. Here's hoping.

Anyone know Dooms production values? Cause I feel like its gonna run into our same problem of sort of already having its nitch fans and hoping to pull in more. Now here's where I feel it will have real problems is that us over here in the bdm camp are the sorta people doom is hoping to entice in. And if it had came out last year, I probably woulda seen it. But this weekend? Seeing Serenity again=)

Dont Worry Ladies and Gents... We all know Joss wont go down without a fight . He will make sure us fans are satisfied. But it doesnt hurt to be safe. So go se Serenity again and buy the DVD's like never before!
