Hey, I like the guy. I don't know what some find so annoying about him (although I'm only on ep 8 of season 4, he doesn't, like, turn into a jerk or something, does he? Scratch that, I don't wanna know at this point). I like Luke Skywalker straight arrow types. Hell, it's nice that Buffy might hit it with someone who at least has heartbeat!

Hope I'm not jumpin' the gun Chrisisall

Wow, Chrisisall, you're really coming along with Buffy!

Yeah, I liked Riley too. I also liked his buddy Graham (the third one). Maybe Riley's "meant" for her/ maybe not, but I thought he was a decent guy and a little optimism in an occasionally very dark show.

When Riley and his friends walked through that door, and down to the staging area for the Initiative my mouth fell open. That was so Bond!
Season 4 is so rockin'.

I already looked ahead to see that Riley isn't listed in season 5 shows ater ep 10 or so, so I assume either he does turn into a jerk, he dies, or becomes a vampire (and then dies). Oh well, I'll enjoy him while I can.

I always liked him too. Her relationship with Angel had a lot more sturm und drang but it was good to see Buffy with a nice guy. And I just liked him--he was a decent person. What's wrong with that? "He was bland" was the biggest complaint. Well, he wasn't Angel. But she needed a change-up. I liked him and liked watching their relationship unfold.

I won't say much else since your only on ep 8.

But we're in the minority, I can tell you that.

I'm with you - I thought Riley was a great character, and very well-acted. (Plus, he's from Iowa, which is where I hail from!) I won't spoil anything, but his storyline in Season 5 is one of the best things about that year.

Ahh, so I guess I do have to get 5,...okay.
As long as Spike keeps his grimy hands off Buffy!

Do yourself a favor, and don't let people's negative opinions of Season 6 cloud your judgement. Some of the greatest episodes of the entire series are in Season 6, and it is one of my favorites - I don't really understand why some fans don't like it. (It has "Once More With Feeling", in my opinion the series' finest hour.)

And the Spike and Buffy "relationship" is completely believable and handled so well! I know it's hard to comprehend if you are only in Season 4, but it happens very organically through the development of both characters.

You do see Riley again in Season 6.

Maybe...

Starting with the Initiative, the BBC episode guide added a curiously (or perhaps ironically?) affectionate sidebar to their Trivia section called, RILEY, YOU BIG LUG: A small shrine to the dumbest man on TV.

Yes, I like Riley too. Like any of Joss's characters, he gets more interesting as time goes by and has his share of surprises like, well, the Initiative.

I've been a member of the Riley fan club for more than twenty years now. Nothing to do with the Buffyverse -- but even though neither she nor I have ever seen an episode with this character, my wife smiled with delight when she saw this thread's title.

If you haven't guessed, my wife's first name is Riley. And thanks -- I just love seeing that little-girl grin on her face.

"his [Riley's] storyline in Season 5 is one of the best things about that year."

Except that it's absolutely awful and a total kneejerk reaction to all the B/A shippers' complaints. Riley should definitely have stuck around.

"And the Spike and Buffy "relationship" is completely believable and handled so well!"

Never!
