It was a pretty rough time in my life when I started watching Buffy. My girlfriend and I had broken up, I hated my job, and in general, I was really depressed. I started watching Buffy around the second or third episode of season 2. I was blown away. I've never cared a whole lot for TV, but with Buffy I cared about the characters, and where the story would take me next. It's the only show that could make me laugh, and cry. It seriously helped me get over my troubles. I had passion for something again, and it was a TV show. a bit sad, maybe, but it's the truth.
To be honest Joss Whedon was the real reason I gave Firefly a chance. I knew the magic he created on Buffy, and I was not let down When Firefly aired. I will always remain a huge Buffy fan, but if Firefly ran 7 seasons, it would have been better.

Oppyh, a l o n g time ago a show called Hill Street Blues did the same for me, so I know where you're commin' from.
I've only seen Buffy S1 so far and it's great, but not yet greater than FF. I'll have to come back to this thread after S2 to compare more.
TV can save your sanity, too Chrisisall

For me, Angel is the best show. From the first episode I was hooked - even more so than I was with Buffy. It's definitely a more adult show than Buffy, and this is probably why i prefer it.
I've only just watched Firefly but thought it was awsome. I can't wait for the movie. I believe that if it'd run 7 series like Buffy, or even 5 like Angel then it would've been the best show. It's got so much in it, and with more series obviously new characters would've been brought in, and others killed off\left, so what someone above said about its durability is null i feel.
I always thought that Buffy series 4 was the worst of the bunch, but rewatching it the other day I realise how good some of the individual episodes was, even if the overall story arc wasn't as strong as other series. The only series I think doesn't stand out as outstanding on rewatching is series 1, as this seems to have aged much more badly than the others. Because of this, I'd urge new viewers not to pick up on the poor points of series 1 when deciding whether or not to continue with series 2-7, as these rarely show such weakness.
So for me it would have to be Angel as the best show, with Firefly and Buffy on a par.

Thanks, PhilJones, very helpful to all us Browncoats discovering Buffy and/or Angel for the first time 'cause of Firefly.
(I thought Prophesy Girl really ROCKED, though!)

Starrbaby, I'm now into S2 of Buffy, and is it great! (you all told me so)! I can so see the Firefly-like dialogue!!
"Cordelia, your mouth is open, sound is coming out. This isn't a good thing." how FAMILIAR that sounds...ha ha ha (is Jayne a Cordelia in space?)
Still like FF better, but Buffy's a lot cooler than I imagined. If only FF had that time to grow...
and I'm starting to like Angel's character, too.
New to me Chrisisall

I actually rememer a comentary on the FF DVDs that mentioned Jayne being FF's answer to Cordi. You hit the nail right on the head saying that.
I, like you, enjoy FF much better. I don't own boxed sets of either Angel or Buffy. I just catch re runs on TV. They're still lots of fun to watch though.

I put Buffy at the top only because it had more years to develop characters and try really creative things. Firefly would have been but we just started to get to know these characters and then the rug got pulled. We'll never really know which one was best.

I think I'll end up buying Buffy S3, then rent from there on to S7 (unless I start liking it even better than I do now, who knows, I'm only into S2 two eps so far!)
Hey, I like these FF spoiler-free threads. Haven't had to shut my eyes abruptly once so far.
(You can watch TV? I feel like that dude in the first ep of Max Headroom during the blipvert when I see commercials!)
