Abundance really just makes you lose interest in really appreciating anything anymore. Songs like this were special to me. We didn't have a lot of money, and I didn't spend much of the little I ever managed to scrounge up on music when there were video games to buy.
Just thinking about going back to a day where you would buy a CD for $15 for one song you loved, and maybe 1 or 2 other ones that you liked enough to listen to again. And the entire process of swapping out one disc for another to hear one or two other songs you like. And cherishing those rare few albums that you discovered you didn't mind listening to from start to finish... Those were the real gems.
Then eventually resigning yourself to recording your favorites onto a cassette tape, which was not high quality and had likely been used to record 50 things before you got to using it.
The way we interact with all this stuff is just so amazingly different than it was when we were kids it's crazy when you go back and think about it.
yeah its all changed, get more connected acorss the world with an overload of info made us all drift apart
You would meet someone at a store, a shopping mall, theer was some mad up role play ball game on the roads some streets some parts of town tougher than others, you could meet at an arcade or maybe an event or as you got older in pub or street corner, maybe outside a cinema ....your arriving early but that doesn't matter as both of you wait a good 15 mins even if the other person is late
and if you rang a home, maybe they picked up a home phone and maybe the mother or sister was also listening in on the other end of the phone, the landline where everyone knew everyone's business by a physical telephone connection that uses metal wires allowing mother or the family to eaves drop
and it was all a shared experience the CDs, the cassettes, the vinyl records, you often listened together in a group and decided if something was 'cool'
then you had stuff that was difficult to get, an old song, a band no longer playing and a record company out of business...was another company going to buy out the Label but at least You went and Bought that Album even if it was second hand, teen treasures to be found in a flea market, old games that would hopefully work or you get to buy something old and unique in the reuse or Circular economy, maybe even a love note inside a book that you didnt want to read or Happy Birthday and a date and you wondered if the original owner of the book was still alive
a scifi fantasy story nobody read in ages but you got it, a cool blues electro rock tune not played in a while
people don't even read books anymore yet alone buy CDs...but maybe Covid changed perspectives
