Paul Schrader Walked Out of ‘Joker 2’: ‘A Really Bad Musical’ Oct 15, 2024
Paul Schrader’s esteemed career includes writing the scripts for movies like “Taxi Driver,” which served as a primary inspiration for the first “Joker” film in 2019. He went on to call the sequel “a really bad musical.”
“I don’t like either of those people,” he added about Gaga and Phoenix. “I don’t like them as actors. I don’t like them as characters. I don’t like the whole thing. I mean, those are people who, if they came to your house, you’d slip out the back door.”
“I saw about 10 or 15 minutes of it,” Schrader said while talking to Jeremy O. Harris for Interview magazine. “I left, bought something, came back, saw another 10 minutes. That was enough.”

I remember saying that when the first Joker came out they should ditch the "cinematic universe" they had been trying and failing to build for 5 years and build one around this version of Joker in a much different world than the ones that the Justice League were protecting. Would it have been a success? I dunno. But at least it could have been interesting. That could have been an era of cheap comic book movies with storytelling and acting above all the multi-million dollar special effects.
But then they gave the real Joker 4 times the budget for his second movie and he lit the whole house on fire.
Meh. Whatever.
Thrilled to see this was outright rejected by everyone.
Since Phillips can't do comedy anymore, this might just be the end of his career in Hollywood. Maybe he and Paul Feig can go work on another Ghostbusters movie.
