Biden's Right: China's Economy Is Indeed 'On the Brink'
President Joe Biden said in his May 28 Time interview that China's "got an economy that's on the brink."
He's right.
And we should care because Xi Jinping may try to solve his economic problems by starting another war.
At first glance, Biden's gloomy assessment looks wrong. The official National Bureau of Statistics reported that China's gross domestic product beat expectations by a wide margin, growing 5 percent in the first calendar quarter of this year compared to the same period last year. That's a slight improvement of the robust 5 percent growth for all of last year.
But neither of these reports makes sense. As Anne Stevenson-Yang of J Capital Research told me this week, "I feel the numbers just don't mean anything anymore."
There is now a large gap between reported results and what we can observe. The widely followed Rhodium Group believes the economy grew about 1.5 percent last year. That's in the ballpark of the "now close to 2 percent a year" that Biden reportedly told a group of Democratic Party donors in Park City, Utah last August.

CHINA HAS ITS PROBLEMS. They are the result of Chinese economic, financial, trade, and social policy errors. But not the result of anything we've done, and not along Zeihan's "predictions".

And it has the resources and development to isolate itself almost completely..

I don't disagree with Zeihan, THE DATA disagrees with Zeihan.
My first clue that Zeihan is full of shit came from Zeihan's own presentation on China's "demographic collapse". He flashed that population pyramid REAL quickly, but my impression was ... "well, THAT doesn't look like a collapse any time soon!" But rather than trying to pause the video on something that lasted for maybe a second, I looked it up elsewhere.
And knowing what I know about Japan's and South Korea's demographic challenges, and EU's population struggles, I compared.
I also tried to validate or refute China's population figures based on sex imbalance.
In other words, RATHER THAN...

Also! Zeihan contradicts himself a lot.
For example, he posits automation as Japan's and America's salvation, but assumes China can't do the same?
And he posits that China is going to experience famine, even as he predicts China's population is going to collapse while its farmland is going to stay the same?
