I try to get dear daugher to let go of things bc she's got hoarding tendencies. But bc of her seizure disorder she can't remember much of her past.... but when something does trigger a memory it's detailed. When I try to get her to give up some things. She doesn't communicate well, but she managed to get out "I don't remember and now you're taking these away from me too". It was very sad and heartfelt.
I think you're doing the right things the right way.
I didn't even consider the memory issue as far as her belongings went... Those are good points. For now, my grams only forgets immediate, short-term things. As far as I can tell, she never struggles with any of the old memories (or at least any more than any of us do).
Sometimes I think that she sub-consciously made a choice along the way to just allow this to happen as well, just like she refuses to do any form of exercise that would make life easier for her and my aunt while she's still more than capable of doing so. If we cleared that room out on her, that part of her might just give up and really start forgetting everything.
I can tell it's going to take some more talking with my aunt about clearing that room out. She didn't seem to "get" where I was coming from when I mentioned it over the phone this morning. But I don't think it will be a problem after we get the basement and 2nd floor cleared out. I think my aunt is kind of panicking about things right now and once the hoard on 2 of the 3 floors is completely gone I think she'll become more reasonable about this too.
It's not as if we can't get rid of anything on the 1st floor and make it much more organized and streamlined, especially if we were to do most of that over time instead of all in a day or two. I just don't want her touching that one room at all.
I remember having a similar conversation with my mom when I was a kid as your daughter had with you when she was throwing away a bunch of school stuff I'd done from some file cabinets one day. Jeez... I might have already been showing signs of hoarding before I was 10 years old.

I was going to work on cleaning my house today, or at least as much as I could get done before my aunt and grandma came over, but with it hitting 90 degrees today and my aunt's A/C out in her car, we agreed to put it off for another weekend. So instead of doing right and getting a jump start on cleaning the house anyway, I've done nothing all day and it's been pretty nice.

Yeah. All the years I've driven I've only had working A/C about two of them. She's willing to try one of those recharge cans that supposedly seal any small leaks. I let her know that she might be throwing $40 or $50 away on it though. It's why I've never done it.
I should be getting some chores done today. We'll see if that happens or not.
