Got the new porch door installed this week, but it's probably too late to paint it and the door frame. I might have to seal it all up for the winter to protect it all from the elements.

Mixed emotions of grateful for the help and annoyed that it took this long that I'm wrestling with right now.

I hate winter. Hate, hate, hate, hate it.

I should have enough inside to keep me busy. Heat will be turned down super low this year though, so not sure how inclined I'll be to even be getting out of bed.

Well, maybe it won't be a super-cold winter and you'll be OK AFA heating bills are concerned. Fingers crossed that is the case!

Is there anything else that you're needing help with to complete? Do you still have projects pending that weren't completed that need to be carried into next year? Do you feel that you and your friend and his dad are about even with the work, or do they still owe you some?

Trying to figure out how far the (justifiable) annoyance goes, and how to mitigate it.

In any case, it sounds like you should take some satisfaction with the work completed so far. You've made a lot of progress, inside and out!

Well... My buddy at this point owes me so much work he's probably going to be paying it off for the rest of his life with how busy he is. It's so much at this point, that I'm reluctant to even give him any more since it's not very likely that it will ever be repaid. I don't like feeling that way, but it is what it is. His old man is into me for about 3 full days worth of work. Had he come early the other day we would have gotten so much done, but he says he'll be here at noon, doesn't show up until 3:30PM, and we're racing against the clock and the dark while getting poured on. There were 3 days prior that were 70 degrees that we could have done it and I would have had time left to do these other things, but we're doing everything last minute like we always do. It's annoying because whenever he needs my help I'm right there early in the morning and willing to work until late into the night.

I won't be able to have the outside wrapped up now this year because there are some things that need warmer conditions for proper drying. Namely wood putty and paint. It's too late. He will tell me that it's not, but he's wrong. There are directions on the products for a reason, and because I follow them, the stuff that I do lasts for decades and doesn't need to be redone every few years because corners were cut.

He's supposedly coming out this week to help with the siding on the back which is a lot more complex than the front. We also need to readjust one of the windows that was done last minute and isn't installed correctly because of it. That's a two man job.

But the thing is, I don't believe him. There will be excuses made and the work isn't going to get done. And that's REALLY going to annoy me then, because I will be wrapping everything up with plastic in even crappier weather conditions when he doesn't come through than I would have yesterday when he told me not to.

It's just... I'm so frustrated right now. I should be happy about the help that I've got, but I'm just annoyed with everything.

Nice little 3.5" rainstorm all day today through tomorrow morning, with another quarter inch or so tomorrow.

Shouldn't be anything to worry about. Hopefully. Not a huge chance for thunderstorms, and wind only around 13mph max.

The Vancouver Canucks last beat the Seattle Kraken (the latest NHL expansion team) in their first home game ever which was in Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. Ha, ha. Score was Vancouver 4- Seattle 2.

Not sure what Gov. Inslee owns Premier Horgan but if Vancouver had lost BC's premier would have owed Gov. Inslee some good Pacific salmon. That was their bet.

Despite the fact I completely wasted a bright sunny day yesterday, I got done what I wanted to do this weekend.

I built a detached set of two stairs to go up to the new porch door out of all of that scrap pressure-treated lumber I bought eons ago before the wood prices skyrocketed.

Nothing overtly fancy, and no hand rails on it (at least for now), but it's built like a brick shithouse.

It's so nice being able to walk into the house like a normal person again and not rely on a precariously placed cinder block.

It's a miracle that nobody ever broke their ankle on that thing. It's been the way in the back for over 2 years now until today.

The price was right. I only used 7 of the 14 various boards I'd bought to build it, and one 8ft pressure-treated 1"x8" that I got from a neighbor years ago when they were throwing away wood (I used that for the "face" of the steps). Combined with using most of the long screws out of a 200pc. wood screw kit I bought on sale for $3, I don't think this cost more than about $16 and around 4 hours of my time planning and building.

I will have to do some fine-tuning on the height on both sides and haven't decided how I want to make the feet yet. If I use green 4x4, I've already got enough to do it. I might go metal though.

But it's staying out there as it is this winter. It should be fine.

First time I've heard the sump pump go off in a while, but everything seems to be operating as intended. I love that cheap little camera I've got down there. I haven't even used it in about 4 months and it fired right up when I logged into it and pulled it up on my TV to watch.

Thunderstorms for a few hours last night, but the power didn't go out.

2.75 inches in the last 24 hours around here with another half inch on the way today. Nothing monstrous compared to the history around here, but we have had some pretty regular rains with low temps so the ground was fairly saturated going into it.

It was nice having a rain season that wasn't 2 to 3 times the average rainfall for once.

They'll cross N America but it depends on where the jet stream drives them. Sometimes it goes diagonally from NW to SE, sometimes it loops down to Texas before coming north again. And in this case, with the bomb cyclone having developed right off CA, the storms tend to run from SW thru AZ, NV, and Four Corners. Can't tell without looking at the 500 mb map.

Anyway, our forecast was kind of effed up. "They" had been predicting about 0.4-0.5" for my location since the storm developed, and they were certain it was going to peak at 3PM Monday. Then "they" downgraded it to 0.1" with a peak at 11AM. So we got the predicted drizzle, by 1 I thought the fun was done, and by 2 it was pouring. I think we may have gotten our predicted 0.4" after all!

No these kitchen cupboards here are old. Also it is a lower cupboard and doesn't look like it has ever had shelves in it. Plus pipes run through a back wall of it.

I would like to figure out how to put in something as bending down to put things away and get them out of it is getting a little awkward for me.

It's sort of a rule for handiness - shelves go above waist level, and drawers go below. That's especially true for kitchen cabinets, since the lower cabinets tend to be very deep, and stuff gets lost in the 'way back'.

But installing diy drawers in a former cabinet requires purchases, tools, and some work! And while installing fixed (not adjustable) shelves is simpler and much easier, it too requires purchases, tools, and work, and of course the shelves aren't as handy as drawers.

So I'm curious what do you see yourself doing? Or, can you pay someone to help you out?

Well, first have to start with measuring the cupboard and then probably buying something that will fit into the space.

They make pre-fabbed shelving in a large assortment of colors so you should be able to get something at least close to what you're looking for if that even means anything to you. But you're still going to have to cut them down to size and around any plumbing with a radial saw and probably a jig saw if you don't want that cut to look lousy.

I don't suppose you've got those tools tucked away somewhere or know somebody who can make a few quick cuts for you if you mark the boards for them?

As for attaching them, I'd look into some small brackets that you can screw into the wall at the heights you want them. No reason to get super fancy with it.

Got a promise for help on the back of the porch tomorrow. Not sure what time, but hopefully at least somewhat early this time instead of starting when it's too late to finish because it gets dark out.

Not especially warm tomorrow, but sunny and dry, which is good because it's super wet the following two days again.

I built myself 3 more benches / stackable shelves out in my garage today, using up the last 6 pieces of cheap green board I bought and didn't use on the stairs and a whole lot of the scrap 2x4's I had out there. They'll fit perfect in my closet in the unfinished room in the basement, and now that I have 9 shelves down there I will be able to put all of my tools in a organized space and finally clear out that pantry so I can remodel it this winter.

Even managed to mow the front lawn before it got too miserably cold to bother with the back.

Dammit....

I tweaked my back a little last night moving an ancient air conditioner from my basement to the garage. Not severe or anything, but my buddy's dad is coming to help wrap up the back porch today and I can't be hemming and hawing about my back to a guy that's 30 years older than I am.

The A/C was on the floor in the closet on a few bricks where the shelving I built ended up going. I can't believe that thing was only 5,000BTU's. It weighed about as much as a 36" screen tube TV! My new 12,000BTU unit in the window was half that weight.

The pantry is empty except for my big pail of rice, a broom, and a fire extinguisher I have attached to the wall. It's all clear and ready to be worked on whenever I get to it now.

I think I'm going to spring for some good 1"x X" wood boards that I can sand down, router a bevel, stain and coat with poly like I did with the closet's upstairs.

Then again, maybe not. I know I'm not putting things on them that would ruin the finish, but unless I put contact paper on the top I can't imagine the finish would last very long in a closet for that purpose.

Buddy's dad came by and we fixed the window. Also took down all the existing siding and put tar paper up covering everything. After he left I got all the J-channel up except for the top and the windows and got it re-sided up to the windows. Used that as an opportunity to replace some bad pieces too. I had to take two more rows off the back of the garage for now, but I'll have enough to put all good pieces up without having to salvage from either side of the garage.

A side note about my water issues...

Sump pump is still going off fairly frequently even though it hasn't rained for a day and a half now.

I think that's my "normal" whenever we get a good deal of rain.

The reason I say that is the foreclosure behind me broke up and removed the driveway. Even though we've had two completely sunny days, the first 6 feet of that mud is still waterlogged with several inches of standing water before the curb/street.

There's also a MASSIVE hole by the garage there where they removed one of the posts for the fence, about 20 feet in from the curb, and it's got a ton of water in it still.

We're just the low point here.

Well, I hope you both stay snuggly warm and dry this year. I think the gloom and shorter days don't do either of you good, so maybe invest in a bright full-spectrum bulb for seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Price as low as $30

I remember a few years after my mom and stepdad moved to Arizona they told me about how "cold" it got by them and had to remind them of their roots.

It's been no higher than 58 degrees on my 2nd floor for a week, dipping as low as 54. I refuse to put the heat on until November, so that's my normal right now for the next 3 days anyhow. Except for when my brother comes in for Christmas, it's not going over 60 degrees this winter with the prices.

54 is a bit cold though, and I think that's why I so easily injured my back moving that A/C unit. It's even worse tonight after working yesterday and I'm having trouble sleeping because of it.

The good news I guess is that I've quickly acclimated to the cold weather outside because of it. It's hard to believe that we had a day that hit 90 just 3 weeks ago.

Not exactly sure what those lights functions are? I was expecting bulbs you'd put in one of your lamps. You'd put it on the coffee table or something?

Did you see the part of my last post about the water Sigs?

That large, deep hole where a post of the fence was removed near the garage of the foreclosure that somebody bought up to flip is filled with water and looks like a well. It's easily 20 to 30 feet inland from the street curb. This is 36 to 48 hours after we wrapped up around 3.5" of rain in 2 days.

My pump is still going off quite often.

Either there's major problems with that ditch across the street, or this is just how it always was.

But the good news is that I think what I saw behind me put to rest any worries that there's something wrong with my drainage. Our land is just saturated. As low as that hole in the ground is, the water level inside of it is probably at least 1 foot higher than my well is. Really hard for me to do anything more than guess about that though.

I wish there was something could be done about that ditch. If it's leaking like a sieve, it's not really helping to move water off the land, is it?

My sis used to have CONSTANT flooded basement, coming up a floor drain, until the village got its act together and cleaned out a major storm drain and - Voila!- that stopped.

They still live in a swampy area, tho. I had to remind her that our dad had gotten permission to break into a storm drain, and installed a drain pipe in our backyard and across another backyard because every time it rained we'd have a mini-pond back there. (Clay soil) And, looking at the basement walls there is a water stain all the way around, about three courses up: Apparently the water table just rose and rose and rose one year.

So fixing the ditch won't solve all of your problems, but it might reduce them by about half.

well, anyway, the looooong gap between rainfall and the sump pump going off is telling me that the water at your foundation ISN'T coming from near your house. It's prolly just- as you say - a low spot and a high water table, contributed to by a bad drainage ditch.

Now, WE have an interesting problem that I'm going to have to get somebody to fix, bc it seems the soil has been washed out (possibly by an underground stream) and a bit of a sinkhole under one part of our sidewalk. The sidewalk has already bowed and cracked. Been so busy with other things I haven't had a chance to attend to it, but I know it'll need someone to look after it b4 the sidewalk cracks and collapses under one of us.

If you're one of the approximately 5% with seasonal affective disorder (SAD, "winter blahs") phototherapy can help, but you need to sit in front of the light - maybe reading - for a half-hour or so when you wake up to kick-start your brain.

Also, some people have difficulty getting regular sleep. Once they've done all of the sleep hygiene things (yanno, regular bedtimes; cool, dark, comfortable room; not drinking coffee or alcohol in the hours before bed; not staring at a screen an hour beore bedtime) then getting bright light regularly in the morning helps re-set the brain clock. It's also supposedly good for people who travel a lot and suffer from jet lag.

I can't vouch for all of this; it's just what I've read and observed in others.

Oh BTW, "monitors" tend to emit a lot of blue light (unless it has a sleep mode) and it's blue light that tends to wake ppl up. That's why sleep specialists recommend shutting down your "screen time" at least an hour before bed.

Maybe one cheap way to avoid SAD is to attend to your "screen time" with your first cuppa?

I myself have created and instituted a routine I call 'early daylight therapy'. It involves sitting outside for half an hour in the morning and drinking tea or coffee, the sooner after the sun rises, the better. My theory is that the light exposure helps reset my biological clock - and that if I get a strong WAKE UP signal at an appropriate time, I'll have a better SLEEP NOW signal at night. So far it seems to be working. When free-running, my daylengths were anywhere from 36 - 52 hours long before I felt any need for sleep. But that's a REALLY messed up schedule to try to fit into the rest of the world! Now I regularly get sleepy at night and do get to sleep easily. It's still pretty late for a regular bedtime, but I think I can adjust that by getting out earlier than I usually do. Also, it's important to get out as early as possible, even though the light spectrum in the AM is biased from blue (those rosy pink sunrises), since timing (earlier is better) is important. And there's plenty of blue light INTENSITY to go around outdoors, even during the early AM, even on a cloudy day, even if you sit in the shade! And it's the blue light that does the trick.

Being outdoors beats any indoor light therapy by a lot because the natural intensity of the sun is so much greater than any light box, and you're not tethered to a small area in front of a box when you're outdoors.

Light boxes used to be fluorescent, and maybe some still are. But to get a lot of light into a compact space, many vendors used folded fluorescent tubes. It was hard to get an even phosphor coating on the inside of those complicated bent shapes. (The phosphor coating is what emits visible light when the gas inside is excited and emits UV light.) And with many breaks in the phosphor coating that would normally absorb the UV light, that meant they leaked a lot of dangerous UV light out of them. Even though you're not supposed to look directly at the light, the emitted UV does reflect off of surfaces. And that is especially dangerous for the eyes, since one sits so close to the light source.

Newer and better light boxes use LEDs.

But getting outside is so much cheaper, and easier.

BTW, on the backside - there's been much made of exposure to artificial blue light at night from TVs, phone screens, and computer monitors. However, as one gets older, the lenses in your eyes become yellow - they absorb blue light and let the yellow light through. Because significant amounts of blue light get absorbed in older people, blue light exposure at night might not be so important for them - or us.

Nah, I just keep the balcony curtain open until I am ready to go to bed. I try not to turn on the lights in here unless it gets really dingy and dark. So far today that plan is working.

I got all of the siding up on the back of the porch.

Also snag at the pharmacy my old doctor isn't keeping up the prescriptions she wrote until the end of the year, so I could only get an week's worth of my seizure meds. I have to go into my new doc and straighten that out. Grrrr! It would have been nice to be warned about that.

Yup and since this is the first time I have had to do this. So not fun. Anyways, I have a telephone appointment for next Monday and I have written a note with a bunch of stuff to tell the doctor and we shall see how it goes. It's not just my seizure meds but also my thyroid as well that runs out the end of November into the beginning of December.

Hey all! Just dropping by. It seems for some reason like I've been EXCEPTIONALLY busy, and my to-do lists are growing longer than my got-done lists by the day. Come to think of it, as I recall, this is always a really busy time of year for some reason. At some point I think I'll need to take time to figure out how that happens, and see if next year I might head-off some of the busy-ness. But not now! I've got too much to do right now!

Here, they do fireworks for all kinds of things! - New Year's, Cinquo de Mayo, the Lakers/Dodgers/Chargers (even the Mighty Ducks) won a game, 4th of July, Chinese (Lunar) New Year... everything but Halloween.

The streets were full of kids, but our small section is always dark. I feel bad bc we didn't do Halloween this year, which is an important holiday for dear daughter (she likes it even better than Xmas!). I hope better for next year.

They're not suppose to as they are banned. But I was hearing them until at least 2am. I was surprised.

Vancouver laid a ban on them after too much property damage last year. But again there were still people letting them off and some damage done.

It was not close to 60 today like it was supposed to be, but it looks like it will be 66 tomorrow!

Had a good day anyhow. I re-set all of the screws in the back porch door jamb after countersinking them. Then I hit 'em all with the wood putty. Caulked the door frame/jamb and where the door meets the j-channel. Sanded the wood putty down and vacced it clean and got the entire frame and jamb primed.

I finally figured out how to make wood putty last forever, apparently. Just put some water in when you're done with it and make sure you put the cap on super tight, then wrap it with a grocery bag. That stuff is still good 6 months after I opened it now at least.

Tomorrow I put two coats of finish paint on it and the outside of the porch is done.

Might mow the front lawn and get up the leaves while I'm out there. I can't imagine we're going to have any more nice days like tomorrow after this.

Porch door jamb and frame painted with two coats and it looks fantastic. Scuff sanded in between coats. Taping off the J-Channel was key. Really gives it a sharp edge and clean look.

Managed to make the most of a wonderful day in the mid-60's and mowed up a full trash bin of leaves while I was waiting for the first coat to dry. Also mowed down my hostas while I was at it.

This place is looking great from the street now. Such a huge difference from a few years ago.
