Dear Care and Feeding,
I am sure you get a lot of these types of questions now, but I really need some help. Despite significant political differences (my immediate family leans conservative and I lean liberal), we have remained a close-knit, loving unit of four. Of course, since the ascendency of Trump, the differences between my brother and me have been increasingly hard to navigate. Still, one thing I thought we had (and would always have!) in common was caring for each other’s welfare and for the welfare of our elderly parents. My father is terminally ill with heart failure and leukemia and has been hospitalized several times during the pandemic; my mother has twice been treated for cancer, most recently in 2017. They are both in their 80s. I’m sure you know where I am going with this.
I live about an hour away from them and visit as often as I can. When I do, I wear a mask despite the fact that all three of us are vaccinated (I made sure to help my parents get vaccinated as soon as they were eligible) and I work from home and observe all Covid precautions. Cut to my most recent visit: my brother unexpectedly showed up with his girlfriend from Peru, whom we had never met before, and neither one of them was wearing a mask. At first I said nothing, though I was very upset, and tried to remain as civil as possible but I could no longer hold my tongue when my brother began to tease me for wearing a mask, mockingly asking me if I had been “mandated.” I told him he had no right to mock me for taking seriously the well-being of our parents. He proceeded to lecture me about how Biden and Fauci are liars. At that point I had to excuse myself.
I privately told my mom I was leaving and encouraged her to dismiss my brother and his girlfriend from the house if they refused to take precautions. Shortly after I left, I believe my brother and his girlfriend left. But the damage is done. I am not sure either of them is vaccinated, and I have no certainty of the levels of precautions they take in their daily lives to know how high a risk they are to my parents. My question to you is this: How do I tell my mom to put her foot down with my brother? She wants to keep the peace and see her children. I don’t want to deny her that. However, if my brother is prioritizing his political views and balks at mask-wearing and taking other precautions to protect two people who are among the most vulnerable to the worst effects of this virus, I feel he needs to be barred from seeing them. What can I do?

I’m sorry—so sorry—that the bizarre politicization of a matter of public health has infiltrated the peace and harmony of your family and driven this wedge between siblings who had formerly managed to keep their political differences out of their relationship (no small thing!). You’re right: we get questions about family breakdowns around the politicization of Covid all the time. It makes absolutely no sense to me that anyone would not take Covid seriously given the scale of devastation we’ve seen. And despite being an advice columnist, I’ve been no better-equipped than anyone else to navigate relationships with people who refuse to take the threat seriously (I have tried and failed).
What I can tell you with certainty is that you will not be able to persuade your brother to see things the way you do (and you seem to be resigned to this) and that you cannot make your mother banish him from her home or her life. You can, of course—and you might as well—sit down with your parents and remind them of the risks they are taking with their lives if they spend time indoors, unmasked, with anyone who might infect them. Make sure they understand what we now know: that even fully vaccinated people of their age, particularly those with the other risk factors your parents have, are at risk of a dangerous “breakthrough” infection (younger, otherwise healthy people, if fully vaccinated, while at risk for breakthrough Covid, run only a very small risk of serious illness). Double threat
During the current pandemic, some scientists have started to worry that the coronavirus could increase the risk of dementia. As scientists from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York warned in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease last year: "It is possible that there may be an existing population who have become unknowingly predisposed to neurodegeneration through silent viral entry into the brain."
There are some signs that Covid infections can bring about neural damage. Researchers at a recent meeting of the Alzheimer's Association, for example, presented an analysis of blood samples taken from otherwise healthy patients recovering from Covid. They found elevated levels of signature chemicals that often accompany the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
This could just be another consequence of the overall assault on the body, including the increased inflammation that comes with the disease. But some animal studies and analyses of human autopsies suggest that the coronavirus can invade the brain. And laboratory experiments suggest that this infection may, in turn, trigger neural damage. In one striking study, Jay Gopalakrishnan at Heinrich-Heine-University in Dusseldorf and colleagues created a series of "cerebral organoids" – miniature, lab-grown brain tissue – and then exposed them to the virus. They saw some marked changes in the tau proteins that are associated with Alzheimer's, and increased neural death, after infection from the virus.
Such findings ring alarm bells for Fulop. "Sars-Cov-2 may act exactly as HSV-1," he proposes. Others – including Gopalakrishnan – are more cautious, however. "We have demonstrated that the virus can infect human neurons, and it can cause some sort of neuronal stress," he says. "And this may have some unexpected effects." Much more research will be necessary to assess any long-term risks for neurological disease.

Under increasing pressure from his GOP primary opponents, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is changing his position on vaccine mandates and now trying to bar private businesses from requiring their workers to get them.
It was just in August, Abbott declared in an executive order that he would bar governments from requiring them. But his office made clear he would not meddle in private business decisions.
"Private businesses don't need government running their business,” Abbott’s spokeswoman Renae Eze said at the time.
But that changed Monday as the uproar from conservative politicians over Southwest Airlines canceling hundreds of flights, which many Republicans have insisted is due to a worker shortage because of employees refusing to get vaccinated. Southwest Airlines and the pilots union have denied that is the reason for the cancellations.
Still, after U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and other politicians slammed Southwest Airlines repeatedly for their vaccine mandates, Abbott issued a new government decree barring any private company from requiring COVID vaccines for employees who object to them for “any reason of personal conscience.”
Hours earlier former State Sen. Don Huffines, one of Abbott’s opponents, declared on social media that if he were governor he’d ban all vaccine mandates. And just over the weekend, another primary opponent Allen West declared he too is even more committed to opposing vaccine mandates even as he was recovering from being hospitalized from COVID-19.

If the COVID-19 pandemic is not brought under control, it would reduce global GDP by a cumulative $5.3 trillion over the next five years, the International Monetary Fund warned on Tuesday.
Economies around the world are now divided into two camps: those with access to the vaccine and those without.
Less than 5% of the population in low-income developing countries are fully vaccinated compared with about 58% in the richest economies.
The IMF is forecasting that emerging market economies will gain greater access to vaccines in 2022, while some of the poorest will have to wait until 2023.
Hospitalizations and deaths are expected to be brought to low levels everywhere by the end of 2022.

A key point that both Putin and Trump share is that when they lie they never apologize. They never acknowledge that they’ve made mistakes or lie because they don’t believe that there is actually a truth out there. It is not just a habit. It’s a policy to try to crowd factuality out of the public sphere. You lie all the time. You call the journalists the liars and then it’s in that confusion that you govern. Because if people don’t believe that there is truth, they think they’re sophisticated but in fact they’re completely impotent.
