I think they were in both USA (or territories) and Canada. They were either a government operation, or a Church operation, not sure if they were Catholic or other Christian Denomination.
One motto attributed to the organizers/perpetrators is something like "remove/beat out the Indian to save the Man." This likely meant something like they thought the Indians were savages, uncivilized, and they hoped that there were "useful" men and women beneath the surface, but they needed to eliminate the surface Indian/native persona to reveal that underlying gem. Unfortunately, this seems to have meant that all of the culture, customs, livelihood of the tribal way of life was scraped away. The children were taken away from their families, perhaps forcibly much of the time. The children were not very willing, and much violence was applied to the victims, beyond corporal punishment.
JSF, the schools were in the US and Canada. I have talked about my own grandmother and her brother and sisters being raised in one in Montana.

What you are talking about is a choice that the Puerto Rican people can make.
Residential schools in the US and Canada were NOT a choice. These places were forced onto my ancestors and the Indigenous people in Canada.

Shitty doesn't begin to cover what was done to peoples like the Haida, Dene, Inuit, Metis, Tlingit, Cree, Mohawk, Oneida, Iroquois. Just to name a few from Canada.

I'm sorry that shitty things happen to people. I'm sorry that the more people try to pretend that things have changed, they're pretty much exactly the same today and shitty things will continue to happen to people.
I mean, Apple literally has to put up nets surrounding the buildings where everyone's iPhones are made in China to catch people who try to jump and kill themselves. Meanwhile, everyone here in the West pretends they give a shit about global warming but they continue to buy all the cheap Chinese made shit that is creating just as much pollution and global warming as it ever did, but they can pretend it's not happening anymore because it's not their streets that are so perpetually polluted that you can't see more than 4 feet in front of your face.

I guess what I want and would be better to get from your government officials is an formal acknowledgement that the same system that happened in Canada happened in the US. And it destroyed cultures and lives.
You've told me yourself in another thread that until I brought up the subject, you didn't know what it was.
I know things haven't changed. Hollywood and the Oscars has only got bullied into changing criteria for best picture catergory.

About 215 bodies of children were located in an unmarked mass grave in/at Kamloops. These are believed to be from Residential Schools.

The bodies were found on the grounds of that particular school. There were over 10 such schools that ran in BC.

Were these all different nations/tribes, or were they primarily one nation at Kamloops?
