Billionaires Want People Back to Work. Employees Aren’t So Sure

The billionaire Tom Golisano was smoking a Padron cigar on his patio in Florida on Tuesday afternoon. He was worried.

“The damages of keeping the economy closed as it is could be worse than losing a few more people,” said Golisano, founder and chairman of the payroll processor Paychex Inc. “I have a very large concern that if businesses keep going along the way they’re going then so many of them will have to fold.”

America’s wealthiest people and executives are echoing Trump's rallying cry, "Get Back To Work, You Lazy Jerks!"

You just brought a bunch of facts. But you claim they're all bullshit because they don't feed into your panic.
No, I had SPECIFIC refutations for most. For example, comparing to-date deaths against annualized numbers of other illnesses? Ignoring REAL LIFE national examples of overwhelmed healthcare systems and high fatality rates? Seriously???

If you have a SPECIFIC argument for, or against, various statements please bring them to the board and stop posting about freedom being sacrosanct when clearly, it isn't.

And, no, I didn't waste my time watching a stupid video about stupid people doing stupid things that proves nothing except that some people are sometimes really stupid.

Why America Can't Respond to the Current Crisis

As the coronavirus outbreak in the US follows the same grim exponential growth path first displayed in Wuhan, China, before herculean measures were put in place to slow its spread there, America is waking up to the fact that it has almost no public capacity to deal with it.

Instead of a public health system, we have a private for-profit system for individuals lucky enough to afford it and a rickety social insurance system for people fortunate enough to have a full-time job.

At their best, both systems respond to the needs of individuals rather than the needs of the public as a whole. In America, the word “public” – as in public health, public education or public welfare – means a sum total of individual needs, not the common good.

Contrast this with America’s financial system. The Federal Reserve concerns itself with the health of financial markets as a whole. Late last week the Fed made $1.5 trillion available to banks at the slightest hint of difficulties making trades. No one batted an eye.

When it comes to the health of the nation as a whole, money like this isn’t available. And there are no institutions analogous to the Fed with responsibility for overseeing and managing the public’s health – able to whip out a giant checkbook at a moment’s notice to prevent human, rather than financial, devastation.

There is no public health system in the US, in short, because the richest nation in the world has no capacity to protect the public as a whole, apart from national defense.

Sounds great. Where do you begin?

Health insurance is a Ponzi Scheme that's been at work for decades artificially inflating the cost of medical care at ten times the rate of inflation to the point that nobody can get any help without it anymore.

Do you even have any idea how much money has gone to pay lawyers, prop up court systems and was given to people over frivolous lawsuits for longer than I've lived?

You might notice the same thing happening right now to your homeowners insurance prices. All of those "ambulance chasers" that call themselves roof repair companies. Those roofs don't get replaced for free. Needless roof repairs is the number one reason that homeowners insurance increases every year. Sometime in our lives, it's very likely that most people won't be able to afford it anymore.

Sure... having a place to live isn't important if you're unhealthy and are about to die because you don't have health insurance, but put a pin in that and tell that to the millions of people who will be destroyed in about 20 years who lost their homes in a tornado or a flood after having paid for homeowners insurance their whole lives and cancelled it the year before because they decided food on the table was more important.

I don't argue with your sentiment, bud. Especially if you don't want to see the Government control it anymore than I do.

I just don't have a clue how you would even begin to fix that problem. Like any other bubble we've suffered through popping in the last few decades, it went ignored for far too long.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Yep, this country is the very best at blowing basic needs. Bigly.

Poor kid.

It's called the Affordable Care Act Jack. It was always meant to be reworked and built upon, but the republicans fucked that up. Time to get someone into office who'll improve upon it.
