Yeah. I knew the history of it.

If nothing else, had it not had John Williams composing the music it might not even be remembered today at all outside of the most die-hard nerds.

It was a fluke. An accident. But like many great works of art in the history of mankind, timeless beauty can come from mistakes.

But trying to compare the original Star Wars to Episode 9 is insanely disingenuous.

Episode 9 benefited from one of the largest franchise names in cinema that has been around for 40 years and made billions of dollars (a majority of that from merchandising outside of the movies... at least until the woke trash they've been putting out). I mean, to be fair I can take a step back for a moment and say that there is nothing that anybody could ever possibly do that would ever live up to the expectations. Ever.

(I know you're a fan of Tim Schafer yourself too, and you're probably aware that this fear is why he said that he has no desire to ever make a third installment in the Maniac Mansion series).

You keep forgetting how bad the first two Disney additions were. Specifically Episode 8 and how much it was hated, and then Solo doubling down on woke and being the first SW movie ever to lose such large amounts of money that there was no way to spin it as a "win" for the producers. (Although once it was clear that it was a loss the access media wasted no time asking the question "Is the day of white male lead movies finally dead?".)

Could they have put out a better end-product for Episode 9? I have no doubt they could have. Would it have mattered at that point? Serious doubt.

They had ZERO plan going into any of it. They had zero clue what Episode 8 was going to look like when filming for Episode 7 started, let alone any concerns about what was going to happen in Episode 9. And in the end, after constant script changing and dumping directors, they painted themselves into a really tight corner.

Lucas had a vision. Granted, his vision for the prequel trilogy was shit, but it was still his vision.

The only plan for the Producers at Disney was their agenda above all else. Even above money.

There were decisions made in Ep's 7 and 8 that either trivialized actions taken (and sometimes even the entire existences of characters) from the first trilogy. There was zero respect for the source material. They were going to do what they wanted to do, no matter how little sense it made.

Rey was going to be perfect. She was going to have zero obstacles to overcome, and zero character growth, because she is a woman and women are perfect.

Of course, in real life, this is not true at all. All but the most flaming, man-hating feminists out there realize this too, so except for in the minds of a few very delusional people the character of Rey is relatable to no-one. No man. No woman. No boy. No girl.

Rey is a basic bitch.

No offense to the actress, who I'm sure is lovely in real life. Flaws and all.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

That is bullshit. Beauty comes from tossing ugly into the trashcan. Or if it is painting or movie, scrape off the ugly and paint over.

In February 1977, Star Wars had grotesque story errors. Look at the video, again. The film was released in May 25, 1977. George Lucas was lucky to be only working on this movie. He had nothing to distract him from the upcoming fiasco/tragedy/failure/disappointment if he didn’t fix what he had done wrong during writing and filming. On the other hand, J.J Abrams was working on a dozen movies and TV shows at the same time he worked on his version of Star Wars. It sure does show in the final product. Abrams was distracted by all money he was making on his many side hustles.

The Open Crawl wasn’t right in early 1977.

1) The long and bad version:

The REPUBLIC GALACTICA is dead. Ruthless trader
barons, driven by greed and the lust for power, have
replaced enlightenment with oppression, and "rule by
the people" with the FIRST GALACTIC EMPIRE.

For over a thousand years, generations of JEDI
KNIGHTS were the guardians of peace and justice in the
galaxy. Now these legendary warriors are all but extinct.
One by one they have been hunted down and destroyed
by the sinister agents of the Emperor: the DARK LORDS
OF THE SITH.

It is a period of civil wars. Rebel Armies, striking from
fortresses hidden deep within the Great Rift, have won a
crushing victory over the powerful Imperial Starfleet.
The Emperor knows that one more such defeat will
bring a thousand more solar systems into the rebellion,
and Imperial control of the Outland systems could be
lost forever. To crush the rebellion once and for all, the
Emperor has sent one of his most ferocious Dark Lords
to find the secret rebel strongholds and destroy them…

2) The short and good version:

It is a period of civil war.
Rebel spaceships, striking
from a hidden base, have won
their first victory against
the evil Galactic Empire.

During the battle, Rebel
spies managed to steal secret
plans to the Empire's
ultimate weapon, the DEATH
STAR, an armored space
station with enough power
to destroy an entire planet.

Pursued by the Empire's
sinister agents, Princess
Leia races home aboard her
starship, custodian of the
stolen plans that can save her
people and restore
freedom to the galaxy.…

Can you see the difference between 1) and 2) ?
George Lucas couldn't. Brian De Palma had to write 2) for him and browbeating him into using it.

Let’s look at Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese philosophy from the 14th century, a world view centred on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. Wabi-Sabi is embracing authenticity, by accepting ‘three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect’ (Powell, Richard R. 2004, Wabi Sabi Simple. Adams Media). In design and art it means finding, and therefore almost encouraging, the beauty in imperfection, and maybe even arguing that errors, damages and signs of aging are making artefacts more authentic, more interesting, and simply beautiful.

Go back to bitching about Trump all day, every day. You're wrong about everything you say, but at least you're good at complaining.

Some might even say that you accidentally turned it into an art form.

A movie is a huge industrial product made with the labor of thousands and you are comparing it to handcrafted art made by a single person. Industrial products are not accidentally good. You have to work and rework until it is right. J.J. Abrams did not have the time to rework anything. That is why Star Wars was trashy; he didn't throw away the ugly and stupid parts; he kept it all in the script; he filmed it in all its ugliness and stupidity; he sent it to the theaters because he was too busy on his other projects: his TV shows and other movies being simultaneously produced during the years Abrams was making Star Wars movies.

Look at all the crap J.J. Abrams makes each year: www.imdb.com/name/nm0009190/
When does he sleep? He is too busy making money to make good art.

It's hard to argue with that point.

I think that perhaps we've hit the point where there is just too much money in movies. The same could be said of modern day AAA video games as well.

Everything is riding on them doing well, or at least having one huge blockbuster to save them from all of their huge budget failures, of which in both industries, there are a lot.

To big to fail isn't a concept based in reality. All of these mega-companies that have spent the last 5 decades buying up everyone else are all too big, and spend every second of every day on the precipice of catastrophic failure.

You want to talk about shit-canning trash?

Let's let the whole thing burn to the ground and see the good that springs up from the ashes.

In the mean time, maybe they can take this COVID-19 break that was forced upon them to realize that every time they push a Woke Agenda in their movies, they're playing with a box of matches in a warehouse of tanker trucks full of gasoline.

It might be a coin toss whether or not a movie is going to be a hit, but when you go woke you're slashing your own odds to 10% or less. That doesn't seem like a marketing strategy that is very sound in the long term.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Almost feel bad for Episode 9 today.

Didn't even clear $7k last night.

That didn't happen to Joker until week 20.

EDIT: Wow. Just noticed that was $36 per theater on average. Joker had almost exactly 10 times that per theater on the same day in Week 13 at $359 per theater.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

New Worldwide Box Office Totals:

Joker: $1,074,251,311
Episode 9: $1,073,798,941

Difference: $452,370

Episode 9 would have to average the same amount of money it made last night for the next 67 days straight and remain in theaters for 1 week longer than Joker did to beat Joker now.

If these were normal circumstances, I'd say that would never happen, but who knows how movies are going to be handled in the next few months. Will theaters be shut down, or just continue to show old movies with no new releases?

If the panic subsides but there are a few weeks before anything new drops, it's possible that Star Wars might have a few more monster weekends under its belt when people start going back to theaters with nothing new showing.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Wow.... I see.

AMC, Regal and Cinemark are closing their doors now indefinitely. I don't see anything about an order to do this. I would imagine that smaller family owned theaters will try to keep their doors open because they have to, but since the big three are shutting them down now that will all but kill the box office numbers since they own most of the theaters in the country.

Do Right, Be Right. :)
