Supreme court rules Trump can use Pentagon funds for border wall; Guatemala agrees to require migrants traveling through it to the U.S. to seek asylum there
President Trump won two victories on his border agenda Friday, with the Supreme Court allowing the use of military funds to expand the barrier on the Mexican border while Guatemala agreed to serve as gatekeeper for asylum seekers trying to get to the U.S.
In a 5-4 decision, the justices of the U.S. high court said President Trump can shift about $2.5 billion in military funds to construct an additional 100 miles of wall at the U.S.-Mexico border in an effort to seal off the U.S. from illegal immigration.
In February, Mr. Trump had declared a national emergency in order to divert a total of $6.7 billion from military and other sources, without the approval of Congress, which had signaled willingness to give him far less. Lower courts had barred the transfer of some of the funds desired by the president, but the Supreme Court on Friday ordered those lower court rulings to be suspended.

Thanks for posting about asylum in Guatemala. I knew that a country had agreed to it, but I couldn't remember which one. It still doesn't help at all with illegals coming in from Mexico itself, but that eliminates anybody from any country south of us except for Belize.

Never. The "thing" is to effectively control it, and at the same time not let a president steal from the treasury at his discretion to satisfy his bigotry.
I have no idea how he pulled off the latest Guatemala agreement. More money under that table? He's the great Deal Maker, right? Rarely does that seem to align with Lawful. But I'm intrigued. Why would Guatemala suddenly change their tune and take ownership? It would be great if it was them being a stand up country, taking responsibility for their borders, but does anyone believe that?

I believe I heard there was money involved. The phrase I caught was "invest in your great country". It might have been a threat like with Mexico... control the refugees or it's gonna cost you in tariffs ... or it might have been a promise ... control your refugees and we'll invest in your great country. Or possibly a bit of both. But I'm sure that Guatemala needed some convincing to do the right thing; it's otherwise so easy just to keep exporting the migrant problem to the hated gringos up north.

It's not bigotry. It's a legitimate problem. We've had politicians in the left and the right lying about doing anything about it for decades. And now we've got politicians on the left screeching for complete open borders in 2019.
Between getting the SCOTUS to give him the money from the pentagon (not robbing the treasury), and Guatemala becoming the country that will make those south of the Mexican border looking for asylum in America now lawbreakers, Trump managed to do what no president before him had the will or the desire to actually do.
That's a big key to the white house right there.

The 1986 Immigration law was likely a sham all the way, but Reagan reluctantly agreed, having bigger matters ( USSR ) and possibly having a bit too much faith in his fellow federally elected officials.
Why would he or anyone else suspect both parties would effectively compromise our nation's security over something so trivial as politics ? Sadly, it's all these clowns exist on. Politics of power.
W really revealed the Establishment mindset when he was genuinely surprised that Americans put illegal immigration near the top of their list of concerns, back in 2006. The gov of a border state , no less.
