Mr. Trump has abandoned most of the core principles that have defined Republicans for the past century. What’s left of the party is Trumpism -- a rigid adherence to tax cuts and politics that regularly interfere with the basic functioning of the federal government.
Keeping President Trump in office is the best way to cement Trumpism’s hold on the Republican Party. That is a huge problem for Elected Republicans: By and large they don’t like him, and they know he’s a long-term problem for the party — but in the short term they know they can’t get re-elected without his voters. For Democrats, it’s the dream scenario — as long as he completes his term.
Nothing will unite an increasingly fraying Republican Party more than trying to remove the president anywhere but at the ballot box. And Democrats won't succeed in getting votes in the Senate to convict the president. In politics, a loss is a loss — there are no moral victories.
Allowing Mr. Trump to lead the Republican Party, filled with sycophants and weak-willed leaders, into the next election is the greater prize. Democrats have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to realign American politics along progressive lines, very much like Ronald Reagan did for Republicans in the 1980s.
Trumpism equals Republicanism as long as Donald Trump is at the top of the ticket. And a real shift to progressivism in America will be delivered by a devastating rebuke of the president and his party, a rebuke that will return control of the Senate and state houses across the nation. Politics is always a gamble — and this is the best bet we’ve had in a long time.
Keeping Trump in office will destroy the Republican Party.

Captain, I agree with you 1000%. This sham cannot stand, they must impeach regardless whether he wins re-election or not. This will put a stamp on him that will be hard to shake. History will show his total lack of respect for the Rule of Law and for the office he holds.

I was on that side originally, and believed in the solid political logic behind it. But the mostly gutless Dems always seem to outwit themselves and hem and haw, and ultimately find ways to DO NOTHING. That's their thing and it's not a good thing. They talk a lot and end up doing nothing. So they'll strategize and guess (and it is a guess, no matter how much you feel you know) and hope to play the odds and wait, and basically give him a pass. "You're guilty but we're not confident enough to uphold the law just yet. But watch out! We'll get you next time!" And they shift to hopefully winning the election. With... whom? So Trump wins, and he gets another 4 years and outlasts the 5 year statute of limitations on obstruction. Trump wins again. That's a lot of winning for that pos. Face it - both ways are guesses. One way is more principled. Time for Dems to shake off their weasilie past and skewer the fugger - at least put it down on the record.

The majority of voters will respond to impeachment and its failure in the Senate. If Congressional Democrats vote for impeachment, in a kamikaze mission doomed to fail when it is blasted out of the sky by Republican Senators, they are also voting themselves out of office in 2020.

Well... to be fair, who in the world really knows how many people actually want impeachment today vs August of 2018? I'm sure both surveys were only around 1,200 people and it would be very easy to manipulate the data one way or another when you're only sampling such a small portion of the American public.
What has changed, for sure, since August of 2018 is the narrative.
I'm not sure where it's heading, but my guess is that the Democrats know that Trump is going to be in for 6 more years and they're hoping that something terrible happens to the economy before his second term is up.
