Now that I think of it, Nixon didn't have to resign. He could have been stubborn, destroyed the tapes, and forced Congress to go through the uncertain legal process of removing him. Without the tapes, the end of his term in office would have arrived before the wheels of justice had finished turning in the Senate, but Nixon exited early so that he could get a pardon and avoid being prosecuted after leaving office.
Trump will be stubborn and create much unnecessary trouble for himself in retirement, unlike Nixon. Trump will be in courtrooms for years after he leaves office. Nixon had a peaceful retirement, avoided all that legal maneuvering, because he was smarter than Trump.

The Federal Election Commission this week issued a $35,000 fine to Sen. Ted Cruz for failing to disclose more than $1 million in campaign loans from Citibank and Goldman Sachs.
The commission found that Cruz took out loans from the banks for use in his 2012 Senate campaign but improperly reported them as coming from his “personal funds,” according to the settlement agreement posted online by the Campaign Legal Center.
“As has repeatedly been reported, the loans were public at the time and fully disclosed on Senate ethics disclosures, but they weren’t reported correctly on the FEC forms,” said Cruz campaign spokeswoman Catherine Frazier, referring to a New York Times report from 2016. “This agreed settlement resolves that filing mistake once and for all.”

The Reuters report examined Trump-branded buildings in Florida because “determining the ownership of properties is easier there than in some other states.” A report from McClatchy found this:
Buyers connected to Russia or former Soviet republics made 86 all-cash sales — totaling nearly $109 million — at 10 Trump-branded properties in South Florida and New York City, according to a new analysis shared with McClatchy. Many of them made purchases using shell companies designed to obscure their identities.
As with the Reuters report, this analysis would only include those where the buyer was traceable, suggesting that the total is probably incomplete. But it is worth noting that these were “all-cash sales,” which turn illegally earned cash into a legitimate asset for the buyer.
The picture all of this paints is of a U.S. president who is knee-deep in laundered Russian money from a system that Putin and his kleptocratic friends have a strong interest in protecting. Perhaps that is why, as Natasha Bertand explained, Donald Trump seems to be trying to rid the government of experts in Russian money laundering.
