The Enron accounting scandal was publicized in October 2001. Ken Lay was revealed as a huge liar because of a recession. He had always been a liar, but now even the most gullible Enron stock owners realized they had been cheated. The least gullible (me, for one) had sold their Enron shares in the year 2000. (Doing that makes me look bad, but I’d rather be positively evil than lose money. Let the middle class suckers lose their retirement savings, instead of me losing my investment, because they trusted the kindly & Christian faithful Ken Lay. I’m not a Christian and I don’t automatically trust them until they prove themselves.)
Enron stock price goes from $90.75 per share in mid-2000 to less than $1 by the end of November 2001. Ken Lay goes into retirement. In the background, his lawyers are working while he has a carefree life since he sold his shares before the crash.
The Ken Lay trial began January 30, 2006. This is an open-and-shut case, yet four years pass before the trial starts.
The jury reached its verdict on May 25, 2006, convicting Ken Lay. His lawyers will appeal, explaining that he is completely innocent and that it is the Enron accountants who are the real crooks. Trump will similarly be blaming his subordinates.
Ken Lay died from a heart attack on July 5, 2006, before he was sentenced, and his convictions were vacated on October 17, 2006, meaning the convictions never happened.
See? This is American justice. All that trouble, years of litigation, and the result is nothing at all is accomplished about Ken Lay. The same could happen to Trump. He delays and delays some more, then he dies, and its as if he never did a wrong thing in his life, at least as far as the American legal system is concerned.

Ken Lay could have settled the case with prosecutors by paying a fine and would not have even gone to trial except wealthy people lost $billions on Enron stock. They were angry. They wanted prosecutors to punish Ken Lay. Nobody is losing their investment because of Trump. There isn't that motivation to place Trump on trial. If a case is ever made against Trump, he will settle it with a payment, after litigating it for years. See Trump University for how that works.

Trump cannot abide losing. His ego can’t contain humiliation.
So what does a cornered Trump do? For starters, he raises the specter of violence against his political opponents.
In an interview with Breitbart News published on Wednesday, Trump noted: “I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump – I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough – until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad.”
In case you missed it, “they” are Trump’s political opponents, including House Democrats and the mainstream media. And the “certain point” could be impeachment but is more likely to be reached if the House investigations reveal crimes Trump committed both before and after he became president.
“I actually think that the people on the right are tougher,” Trump warned in the same interview. “But the left plays it cuter and tougher. Like with all the nonsense that they do in Congress ... with all this invest[igations] – that’s all they want to do is – you know, they do things that are nasty.”
Here we have it, in a nutshell. In Trump’s mind, congressional investigations that could cause him shame and humiliation, and quite possibly result in a prison sentence, will be countered by forces loyal to him: the police, the military, and vigilante groups like Bikers for Trump.
To put it another way, the work of a democratically elected Congress will be met by Trump loyalists who, he asserts, are “tougher” because they have brute force on their side.

Trump changes direction, says there ‘should be no Mueller Report’
Donald Trump has thrown plenty of tantrums, online and off. The president has lashed out at Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation; he’s condemned the probe as “illegal”; and he’s accused Democrats of being guilty of the transgressions he’s been accused of. So the fact that Trump did all of these same things in a series of tweets this morning wouldn’t ordinarily be of any real interest.
Except, this time, the Republican, perhaps feeling some anxiety about what’s to come, went just a little further than he has before.

For as long as Trump is not convicted of a crime by Mueller, the GOP can pretend there is nothing damaging in a future Mueller report. Since Mueller doesn't even have the authority to arrest Trump like he did Roger Stone or Paul Manafort, Mueller cannot get Trump in court. There will be no trial until Trump is a civilian. Then the law can hammer Trump into an early grave unless Trump pardons himself on his way out. Then Trump's lawyers will argue that the pardon is valid, and many years will pass before a GOP controlled Supreme Court says that it is valid in a vote of 5 to 4.
Trump will get off scot-free. The Mueller report will only raise Trump's legal bills in retirement by a few million per year. That's nothing to a multi-billionaire. Today's Trump lovers will love him until he dies, without regard to what is in the Mueller report. Trump will grow ever richer from their love of him and his brand. He will easily afford the very best lawyers to keep him out of jail.
