"No Wall In Any Form": Govt Shutdown Odds Explode Amid Trump-Schumer Standoff

With a potential government shutdown just days away, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) dug in on Sunday, telling Meet The Press that President Trump is "not going to get the wall in any form."

Last Tuesday Trump, Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) clashed over Trump's $5 billion demand for border wall funding in an awkwardly televised argument in the Oval Office, prompting Schumer to later declare on the Senate Floor: "I want to be crystal clear. There will be no additional appropriations to pay for the border wall. It’s done."

The New York Democrat echoed his comments on Meet The Press Sunday, telling host Chuck Todd that Trump doesn't have the votes in the House or the Senate - saying that the president is having a "temper tantrum" over the wall.

"They do not have the votes to pass the president’s proposal — $5 billion or whatever it is for the wall," said Pelosi at a recent news conference. "So … if nothing is going to change in that regard, I don’t know why we just don’t proceed to keep government open so that people can be home for the holidays."

Meanwhile, the odds of a shutdown spiked to 58% on PredictIt, nearly double what it was 24 hours ago.

$5 billion for a wall that would cost $50 billion to actually build? Just another scam from your favorite Russian cuck smocker. If anything, it's probably like the inauguration funding sham. We should be looking at who the bids are coming from and see if any have worked with Trump Enterprises in the past. I sense "deal making" being done.

Oh the rich irony - guess you missed how Pelosi was quoting Trump. And if are too then you're a complete idiot. If you believe anything that Trump says you are an idiot. It's the biggest tell, defending Trump, because you really do have to fall into one of the following categories.

1, 2, 3: a complete moron of some sort. Seriously, we all know that no matter if you have a side or not, that all politicians lie. But if you support someone who lies as much as he does then you have to be too unethical to care or too stupid to notice, or a Russian supporter (which follows you would also be for the failure/diminishing of the US).

4. Such a devoted GOP follower that you simply don't care what he does, he's your guy.

5. Wealthy and the poor can suck it.

6. "Democrap/Libtard" hater (ie, brainwashed). You are "anti" something - maybe not pro Trump, but def anti something.

Do you think Trump is being honest when he talks about the wall and the $5 billion? Do you think the wall will solve the immigration problem?

After writing this, how can Trump not go through with his threat of a shutdown?

That was 4:55 AM. By 11:35 AM Trump was already going in reverse:

President Trump on Tuesday retreated from his demand that Congress give him $5 billion to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, backing down amid acrimonious GOP infighting that left him with few options four days ahead of a partial government shutdown.

The news, delivered by White House press secretary Sarah Sanders in an interview on Fox News, represented a major shift from Trump’s declaration last week that he would be “proud” to shut down the government to get the money he wanted for his border wall.

Why Trump Can’t Build His Wall

Without discipline and bargaining skills, the administration has never stood much of a chance.

Trump’s border wall died yet another death on Tuesday, as the White House retreated from last week’s boasts about shutting down the government over it.

Trump’s renewed bluster served only to demonstrate how weak he is, and to weaken him further for the next round of bargaining. Who’s going to believe him after so many empty threats?

The spending negotiations last fall presented Trump with his one good chance to follow through on the wall. Senate Democrats, who had some leverage thanks to the filibuster, were reportedly prepared to trade wall funding for their own immigration priorities. Trump, however, asked for too much — including changes to legal immigration that quite a few Republicans opposed — and got nothing instead.

And so it’s gone, for almost two years. The White House doesn’t have the organization or discipline to push anything to the top of the congressional agenda and keep it there. Trump hasn’t demonstrated competent bargaining skills; he asks for the impossible, lashes out at allies and opponents, fails to grasp where the votes are, doesn’t seem to know what the other players want that he can get them, and folds easily. His frequent idle threats only hurt his reputation and strengthen the resolve of those he deals with.

I was wondering if Trump had learned? No! He remains a Mighty Blowhard:

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
In our Country, so much money has been poured down the drain, for so many years, but when it comes to Border Security and the Military, the Democrats fight to the death. We won on the Military, which is being completely rebuilt. One way or the other, we will win on the Wall!

Mexico is paying (indirectly) for the Wall through the new USMCA, the replacement for NAFTA! Far more money coming to the U.S. Because of the tremendous dangers at the Border, including large scale criminal and drug inflow, the United States Military will build the Wall!

US Fires Tear Gas Into Mexico As "Violent Mob" Of Migrants Rush Border
Imagine what would happen if a wall near Tijuana didn't exist ...

Quote:

US border agents have reportedly fired tear gas into Mexico to push back against what one official called a "violent mob" of migrants as they rushed the US-Mexico border near Tijuana.

Reuters reports that clouds of the noxious gas could be seen wafting up from around the fence at the border. One migrant picked up a canister and threw it back into U.S. territory.

More than 150 Central American migrants approached an area of the border in Tijuana in the Playas neighborhood near the beach late on Monday.

Migrants said they thought security measures might be relaxed due to the New Year’s holiday.

U.S. security personnel fired tear gas into Mexico after midnight as some migrants prepared to climb a border fence, according to the Reuters witness. During a second attempt, migrants began to pass youths and children over the razor wire along the fencing to the U.S. side.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Katie Waldman called the group “a violent mob” and said they had thrown projectiles at agents who responded with “the minimum force necessary to defend themselves.”

“Congress needs to fully fund the border wall,” Waldman said in a statement.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement the gas was aimed upwind of people throwing rocks on the Mexican side who obstructed agents from helping the children being passed over razor wire.

CBP said most of the migrants attempting to cross returned to Mexico while 25 people, including two teenagers, were detained.

U.S. agents fire tear gas into Mexico at 'violent mob' near border

TIJUANA, Mexico (Reuters) - U.S. border agents launched tear gas into Mexico early on Tuesday to deter a group of migrants that one official called “a violent mob” from crossing over from Tijuana, according to a Reuters witness and the U.S. government.

Clouds of the noxious gas could be seen wafting up from around the fence at the border. One migrant picked up a canister and threw it back into U.S. territory.

U.S. officials said the group had attacked agents with projectiles but a Reuters witness did not see any migrants throwing rocks at U.S. agents.

Tijuana has become a flashpoint in the debate over U.S. immigration policy, which has been intensified by the recent deaths of two migrant children in American custody and a partial U.S. government shutdown over U.S. President Donald Trump’s demand for $5 billion in funding for a wall along the border with Mexico.

A previous incident in November when U.S. agents fired gas into Mexico to disperse migrants triggered a call from Mexico’s government for an investigation, as well as international condemnation.

Mexico Foreign Ministry spokesman Roberto Velasco said the government “regrets the events” at the border. He said Mexico “advocates respect for migrants’ human rights, security and integrity, while calling for respect for laws on both sides of the border.”
