On the west coast the rain comes primarily from the ocean. So overall rainfall isn't affected by ground surface moisture.
There IS such a thing as fog-harvesting. Certain areas have conifer stands that readily condense fog on their needles, where it drips down and waters the roots, in a self-perpetuating system. But once you cut the trees down nothing catches the fog. It rolls in and back out, and all that moisture is unused. It's a puzzle how to reestablish the system once the trees are gone.

Jack, I was specifically talking about western forests (and prairies) that are adapted to drought, not every forest everywhere. Not the hardwood forests of the southeast, or the boreal forests of the north, or the deciduous forests of the northeast and north central US, or even the temperate rainforests of the Pacific northwest.

No. I still have a few days off of work still.

I expect that kind of thing regularly from T. Kiki has been known to exhibit behavior like this from time to time as well and should be called on it.
I'll give her the benefit of the doubt here and say that maybe she wasn't aware that she was being a dick, and she might very well even talk to her own friends who aren't as privileged and educated as she is like this too. It's for her own good.

EDITED TO ADD: And just an FYI, the "many small unsurpressed" forest fires create ash and other debris that would also hold in moisture, and this is all part of a delicate ecosystem that had been put together long before man was around to screw everything up.
It would stand to reason that during these recent "beautification" projects that removed all debris, that the ash from these smaller fires were removed along with all the other branches and leaves that held in any moisture that would naturally prevent these fires from raging out of control like they do today.
I reject that you know it all simply because you went to school.
I don't believe half the shit they teach in school today because of politics, and this is a heavily charged political issue, so why would this be any different.
Maybe you should take this opportunity to question your own education, rather than lord your self perceived superiority over others.

Might as well explain why they were at JSF's expense while I'm at it here since it will only be inevitable that he chimes in as well and I end up getting double teamed by two people who usually don't get along with each other very well.
The "zingers" toward JSF, at least on my side and I'm not speaking for Brenda, were initiated because I was replying to his obviously right wing ideologies and pre-programmed predispositions he holds on climate change and his absolute close-mindedness on the issue because of his staunch and unwavering partisanship to the GOP.
What we seem to have uncovered here is an equal and opposite ideological stance and close-mindedness on this issue on your end as well.
Curious, since I don't consider you to be an ideologue for the Lefties. The ones that frequent these boards seem not to believe that either. That's for sure.
It's likely more to do with you having to question that high priced education that you received, and what that might do to your "bubble" if you found out some things you have long held as absolutes were absolutely-nots.

I never said I believe the climate change narrative. If you read my posts to Kiki I don't trust anything that comes out of acedemia today relating to the issue because it's so politically charged and they're Liberal strongholds in the nation today.
I'm extremely suspicious of anybody from either side who is 100% confident that they're right because of their ideology.
The truth lies somewhere in the middle.
I don't believe that this is the end of the world as we know it, but I think it's foolish to believe that we don't effect our environment just because Limbaugh and Hannity told you so.
