Oh, I figured it out. You mean the early report from 1972 which I posted to show how far back the connection between fire suppression and fuel build-up goes. Followed by a second report from 1999 showing the same thing. And for good measure, here's another paper from 2015 saying the same thing, http://science.sciencemag.org/content/349/6254/1280

I can't imagine this is a new thing. 300 or 400 years ago there must have been unrestrained fires in CA, and Pilgrims were sure to have seen the smoke. Just wouldn't have known it was from 3,000 miles away.
Tonight news said that we have smoke in the sky here in Green Bay, but it is coming from Canada. Yes, that is North of us.
Green Bay is 3 degrees of latitude North of Chicago, and NYC another degree South of Chicago.

So Jack - I'm curious.
The idea that many small unsuppressed fires repeated over many decades contribute to the health of an ecosystem goes back over 40 years. I happen to have learned about it years ago under the slightly different guise of prairie fires, but it's the same concept. But the environment/ biology/ medicine is sort of my 'thing' that I've learned about formally and informally since I was a small child. I'd be more surprised if I didn't know about it.
What I'm wondering about is how such a well-known concept eluded you, a civilian of the topic. Should I attribute it to mis-education in the public school system? A big blank in schooling filled in by Smokey the Bear PR? Poor reporting in an ongoing way that just happened to miss the concept over all these years?
I'm really curious where your ideas came from, and where the mis-direction, or blank spots in your information came from.

My Public School in WI was a follower of John Muir. Many reports are biased with the Government programs or against. Most against point out the Government oversight of Forestation was destructive. Which side are you on? And what do you call the different sides or philosophies?

How much contribution to the problem do you feel the diversion of CA water to L.A. was? And also the direct flushing of CA freshwater reservoirs to the ocean?

That's because we didn't have a written language. I am sure there were stories passed down of major fires or flooding even. You would have to go through the histories of various tribes in areas to see about the fire seasons then.

Yes, runners would have carried news of fires in areas of tribes that were on friendly terms.
