I read somewhere that Koko was something of a unique case. They worried about her being alone, and introduced her to a male, and she spent endless hours trying to teach him sign language which he didn't learn, except the most rudimentary signs. She tried desperately to communicate her more complex thoughts to him, but he just didn't understand.

Poor Koko - not really human, and not really gorilla either. I hope, as KIKI said, that her last moments were peaceful dreams. But then, I hope that for all people too.
